Thank you all for your help. Although my response/mitigation was rejected, I got an offer of out of court settlement. I was asked to pay £175 admin cost and £3.30 for the fare.
It wasn’t rejected. It’s been accepted, and hence you are not being prosecuted, just that you have to pay the fare avoided plus their costs.

What a strange way of phrasing it. It sounds like they don’t really know what mitigation means!

Thanks for letting us know. A decent result all things considered but that letter from WMT is awfully written.
