Crossrail has now been built and is running as the Elizabeth line in passenger service. Upon looking at the maps, the line passes practically right underneath Limehouse station, albeit on a curve. Was any consideration ever given to building a station here and/or could one ever be built in future? Would it be a total waste of money? It's the same sort of length between stations as other stops on route and would provide a C2C connection which might have some benefit, particularly for westbound passengers.

Thought it was worthy of a discussion, and is quite speculative so here we are!

I suspect (but am not sure) that the 2 lines (up/down abbey woods) of crossrail are at different verticalities at that point due to Stepney Green Junction. It’s also on one (maybe two) curve(s) which doesn’t present itself too nicely to a massive 250m+ platform. Would be nice to have, but I suspect the architectural and engineering difficulties would drive the price up significantly

It would be astonishing if it hadn't been. I suspect that like the Victoria Line station at Manor House, it got removed from the plan due to overcrowding concerns.

It was similar at Holborn. But at the end of the day, you can only have so many stations. Tottenham Court Road and Whitechapel are much better interchanges than Holborn and Limehouse respectively.

The answer as to could it be built in the future, is no. It would be too much hassle and just wouldn't be worth the cost.

Technically, anything is possible, although in this case you wouldn’t want the station on a curve or gradient.

economically - no chance.

We’re in the future, nearly, where Crossrail runs through from Stratford to the West End - and we can finally reap the relief needed for a Shoreditch HS Central line station!

Except it’ll never happen. These wounds don’t tend to get reopened in the modern age. That was touted way back when, not heard a peep on it recently.
