Ffestiniog Round Robin ticket buying and train operating companies.

I had an excellent, if tiring day, visiting Wales yesterday from Derbyshire. However when I tried to buy the ticket at Stockport they couldn't find the destination, I tried to help with code J293 which is on railrover.org to no avail. They let me back on the platform and I could buy from the TFW conductor without any problem so all was well. Is there anything I can say to help them if I go again? I also couldn't seem to find the correct destination on a Northern TVM, is there one?

I also noticed that on Railrover.org then it suggests I might be able to use other operator then TFW for connecting services. Transport for Wales, Ffestiniog Railway, any operator's connecting services. I used TFW throughout but does anyone know what this might mean in practice?

It would almost certainly be on the Rovers and Rangers menu.

I thought it was not on that menu but destination Minnfford.

looking at the map I guess it means that , for example, starting from Warrington or Lime St you can use any train to get to Crewe or Chester. Or indeed Stockport to Chester with Northern.

There is nothing to indicate a TOC restriction, so it is valid on all operators. This is made clear by the inclusion of routes which are only served by other operators, such as Crewe-Warrington/Liverpool, Liverpool-Bidston and Stockport-Chester, on the official map.

It appears like you can only buy it at a ticket office. (link to TfW website)

Also, some ticket offices might not know how to sell you one, so patience will be needed when buying it.

This is the key bit of info.

I had a slight struggle at New Street trying to get this ticket around a year ago, but after pointing out that it's a point to point from Birmingham Stations it was very straightforward.

It's done this way to more easily have the "add-ons" for travel into the round robin from outside the route itself.

Indeed. Oxford Road struggled (which is fair enough) until I explained how to issue it. It's definitely a fair assumption that it'll be on the rovers and rangers part of a TIS.
