Seen this unit today at Bristol TM but not in Platform 5 Book. I read it maybe a 158/9 that has been split down to 2 units. anyone shed any light

158749 is a normal 2 car unit, the 3 car units are numbered 158950-158959 but do sometime get cut down to 2 cars.

I think it's more that the unit in question doesn't exist or belong to FGW according to some sources.

It's composed of the carriages 57749+52749

In which case they retain the 1589xx number, seen a few like that.

I think it was formed into a 158/9 but has been replaced by another unit, check the 158/9s and look for those coaches being formed into one (or 2 if it was used to provide the "extra" coach of them.

The 2 coaches of this unit were in 158956 and 957 but have now been reformed and the coaches from 158748 have taken their places.

If the two cars from 748 have replaced the two cars from 749, then that begs the question of what has gone into 952 and 953...

158 952 is supposed to be 57748 / 52762 / 57762
158 953 is supposed to be 52748 / 52750 / 57750

158 956 is supposed to be 57749 / 52768 / 57768
158 957 is supposed to be 52749 / 52771 / 57771

57745 replaced 57748 in 952 and 52745 replaced 52748 in 953. I think this one happened a couple of months ago.

I'm sure I read somewhere that the formations are fluid and can change depending on operational circumstances and maintenance requirements.

I have in my records 158749 from Romsey to Southampton on May 19th, but no record of which vehicles it was formed of. Someone mentioned that FGW regularly swap carriages in their hybrid 158's, which indeed is the case. I think they must have quite a job on their hands keeping enough units running for all diagrams.

I recently also had 158954 from Bath to Trowbridge on May 29th. It was formed of two non-disabled-lavatory vehicles (57xxx I think but am prepared to be corrected)

They have reformed 158749 from the extra coaches formerly in 158956/957, split 158745 to go into 158952/953, took 57748/52748 out of those 2 and put them into 158956/957!
Simples, not.

The renumbering on the end of 158749 will be whatever was available at the time, I have seen black insulation tape used before now. ;)
