Interestingly, the Travel Essex Newsletter April 2024 notes some interesting changes to First Essex services from the 2nd June 2024.

Big changes such as the increase of Airlink X30 to every 30 minutes, the extension of Canvey-Southend route 21 to Landwick, re-instatement of route 71 to Colchester and services B5 and S10 re-introduced.

It's reassuring to see services being improved after years of cuts. I do wonder what other potential improvements are on the cards in the future...

Is this First Essex trying to tighten their grip on Colchester and push Arriva out?

The off peak 87 to Horkesley Heath every 20 minutes, S8 peak extentions to Colchester Hospital and the S10 hourly to Ipswich Road and St John’s - although directly linking Colchester Hospital is a novel idea.

The 21 to Landwick as well. This is already served by Arriva routes 7 and 8. I wonder if First are now trying to push Arriva out of Southend like they are in Colchester.

Apart from Essex County Council route 63, have First and its predocessors ever ventured further towards Shoeburyness, as I believe this has always been traditional Southend Transport/Arriva operating territory.

First have operated east of Central Southend before, serving Southchurch with services 27 (now cut back to Southend) and 24 (now operated by Stephensons) at various points. However Shoeburyness and Great Wakering etc has been deep Arriva territory for as long as I can remember. I will be interested to see how the 21 extension goes given the competition it will face, certainly can’t fault First’s ambition though.

Had a check on Flickr. As I thought, Thamesway worked to Shoeburyness in the early 1990s during the bus war that resulted in Southend Transport selling out to British Bus.

How has the X20 Stansted to Colchester performed since introduced?
Has the 133 Arriva been affected?

I still think the service provision on routes to Chelmer Village remains particular poor with infrequent services, late starts and early finishes. I'd hope the new Beaulieu Park station might get a bit of a revamp but I'm not optimistic as there are usual provide a little as you can get away with mentalities at the moment. There have been several occasions recently where the 47 has skipped stopped the bus station which is poor, especially with a 90 min frequency in the peaks. When you tweet First or complain all is get is a we are very sorry but no follow up.

Apologies if already mentioned but I'm guessing Ensignbus news now comes under this thread and I don't think I've seen it here... First's Ensignbus division are going to be launching a second open-top service in Southend this year, alongside the established 68. New 99 will briefly overlap between Westcliff Casino and Southend Pier (presumably the first suitable place to turn west of Southend Pier), then continue eastwards past Sealife Adventure and along Thorpe Esplanade to terminate at Shoeburyness East Beach (Rampart Terrace bus stop). Like the 68 the route will operate until 15th September - hourly weekends and public holidays during term time, and half-hourly daily during school holidays.

The leaflet shows four buses in different liveries representing 'Rossi' ice cream flavours. A search of Flickr and Bustimes.org has found the following:-

What’s better for a day at the seaside than an ice cream and a ride on an open top bus? With Southend’s 99 you can have both, as we take you on a seafront cruise starting near Rossi’s famous Southend Pier ice cream shop and taking you along the coast to Shoeburyness on one of our fabulous buses, each painted in one of Rossi’s most popular ice cream flavours.

Buses leave from Southend Pier, just by the Pier Hill Lift, every hour from 9.45am to 4.45pm on weekends and bank holidays from May to mid September, and daily during the school holidays.

What’s more, there’s a bus every 30 minutes during the school summer holidays and on other busy days all across the season – just check our socials for up to the minute information.

You’ll find us on Facebook or X at EnsignBusCo (Follow the links below)

New timetables are up on bustimes.org - can be found by skipping to Monday 3rd June.

The replacement of the X10 'shorts' by the B5 number will certainly make the route a lot less confusing. It was previously difficult to differentiate where/which direction the route went in Basildon. The frequency uplift on the X30 is certainly much welcomed, however I do feel the variations within the route might become too confusing. Alternate journeys are running 'fast' between Stansted and Chelmsford by not serving Gt Dunmow & Broomfield Hospital, but other journeys will now serve Southend Hospital instead of the Airport. Perhaps re-numbering journeys via Southend Hospital X31 would help.

The 21 to Landwick as well. This is already served by Arriva routes 7 and 8. I wonder if First are now trying to push Arriva out of Southend like they are in Colchester.
The route seems to follow much of Arriva's established route 2 via Southchurch Road before joining Arriva's routes 7/8 from North Shoebury ASDA. Journey times are similar, but I do wonder if passengers will be tempted by the better 30 minute frequency First offers or stay loyal to the established routes Arriva offers.
I imaging Beaulieu Station might gain some S106 funding for bus routes, but I can't see any obvious routings. That funding is certainly why the C9/C10 to the new estates still have a decent 30 minute frequency up until 11pm. Agreed with the Chelmer Village point, although First will be running a late night X71 service on weekdays departing Chelmsford at 22:30 instead of the last bus being at 20:45. Not great, but it's better than nothing I suppose.

The new First corporate livery has now reached Essex, with Basildon’s 33987 the first to be painted, and 33984 soon due to follow.

What new First corporate livery? The only group wide livery I’m aware of is the electric one; but these E400MMC’s shouldn’t qualify for that. Everything else is either Essex Bus or Shuttles (in Essex obviously).

Basildon will be going electric in 2025 but wouldn’t have thought they’d use the ‘electric’ livery before then. AFAIK First East of England aren’t using that livery to repaint everything into in Norwich - if they did that surely it would undermine the whole point of the brand (much like they did in the original Barbie days).

Do you have any links to photos or a description? Thanks!

Thanks for sharing. I don't think they have finished painting the fleet in Shuttle Red ) Essex Green so will be interesting to see if only the non-red / green buses will get the new livery for now or it will be a random selection of vehicles
