Hi, currently at Gatwick going to Kalamata. Flight has been delayed by... 2h59 on the dot so far according to easyJet. Given the delay obligations start at 3h for this flight sector I find it a bemusing delay.
Think easyJet may be playing other games though. I only got informed around 2am of the delay in the app/SMS - usually they are much better than this.
I actually noticed a few hours before this as when I was checking the Gatwick departures I noticed that the flight wasn't there. Somewhat panicked I'd forgot the day, so googled the flight number and it was clearly delayed. Very annoying as if I knew earlier I would have potentially got a hotel or something.
Anyway, I digress. The reasons given for the delay given is:
We're sorry that your flight has been delayed. Due to a military exercise taking place in and around the airspace at Kalamata, the airport will be unable to accept departures and arrivals at the time. As your flight falls within this time band, we've had to delay your departure time until after the exercise has been completed. The disruption to your flight is outside of our control and is considered to be an extraordinary circumstance.
I did some googling and there is an annual military exercise every year on these dates. I also noticed we are the only flight today (not unusual I think). It seems very odd they would only find out airspace was closed for a planned annual military exercise at 1am 4 hours before the flight.
Is a pre planned military exercise really an "extraordinary circumstance" like easyJet are claiming? Seems very odd to me.
