This has probably been posted somewhere before, apologies if it has.

Why is Flying Scotsman now numbered 60103 when most of the time I remember it was always 4472?

Just curious.

Thanks

It was 4472 in pre-nationalisation days. It became 60103 in 1948 to conform to the numbering system used post nationalisation.

Its first number was 1472. The 'Wikipedia' entry lists the numbering history quite well - 1472, 4472, 502, 103, 60103.

Still prefer the classic 4472 in gold on green paintwork.
I would certainly argue that the bright LNER apple green livery is more iconic and associated to a greater extent with 'Flying Scotsman' than drab BR Brunswick green (even if not prototypically accurate for it's current guise!). The 4472 number is probably a part of that, but might have less relevance to the average observer than the overall effect.

I remember being a bit confused the first time I saw, some years ago, a postcard of 'Flying Scotsman' and 'Mallard' together wearing their BR era identities as 60103 and 60022 respectively when I only knew of them as 4472 and 4468!

Those wretched German-style smoke deflectors really preclude it being painted in LNER colours and number(s). I wish they were never refitted during rebuild as 6201 shows they are not required.

At least it's got an A3 boiler again now. I know they did carry A4 boilers from time to time but it didn't look right to me.

That's a complete different class of locomotive, the Princess class locomotives have never been fitted with smoke deflectors throughout their careers. However when the A3s were fitted with a double chimney it was was a serious issue which was solved by using 'German' smoke deflectors.

LNER 4472, post nationalisation BR 60103 with a few different numbers inbetween.

Here's a snap taken on 27 May 1974 by my late mother - sorry I don't know where it was taken.

Looks like Carnforth to me, she spent many 'happy a day' there, albeit on the wrong side of the country ;)
That figures - my parents spent a lot of time in the Lake District and nearby areas. On another slide in Mum's collection there's one of LMS 5690 in its plum(?) livery.

I believe it's current number is 98872 regardless of what is painted on the cab sides.

Which is in itself confusing as the A3s were never as far as I know rated higher than type 7, though 98772 would clash with 34072 257 Squadron. Perhaps an excuse could now be that BR never reevaluated them one the double Kylchap exhausts were fitted.....

The 1957 Observer's Book of Railway Locomotives which I have in front of me agrees with you, so it's interesting that the A3s also qualified for the application of BR express passenger blue, which was otherwise only applied to type 8 locos.
