Bayern Munich must have thought that with the game being still goal-less well into the second half of their first-leg Champions League semi-final against Barcelona last night, that they would have the chance to progress onwards after the return leg....then Messi decided to add to his already large goal tally in all matches this season.

No team looks forward to taking a three-goal defecit into the second leg of any match, though such matters are not unheard of being overturned.

I certainly didn't forsee that, I forecast 2-2 and I thought there would be one goal at most between the two sides.

Even Bayern Munich aren't going to overturn this!

I wouldn't speak too soon.

In the quarter finals bayern Munich overturned a 3-1 deficit and won 6-0,
Two seasons ago I believe bayern Munich beat Barcelona 4-0 at home. It's not as cut and dry as being suggested.

Well yes, never say never and all that but I really don't see it happening, I thought Bayern Munich should have shut up shop and settled for a one goal deficit

The Newcastle circus rolls on, John Carver has now said 'I'm the best coach in the Premier League'. :D

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/32627362

John Carver says he is the "best coach in the Premier League", despite leading relegation-threatened Newcastle to only nine points from 48.

The 50-year-old was asked to take over as manager from Alan Pardew at the end of 2014, but the team have only won two games under his stewardship.

Newcastle are two points above the drop zone having lost their last eight successive matches.

"I still think I'm the best coach in the Premier League," he said.

"If I have the right tools I can do the job. I'm doing the job to the best of my ability."

Best/good coach ≠ Best/good manager.

Clever play on words.

If Manchester United do indeed manage to sign 21 year-old Memphis Depay from PSV Eindhoven, they will have a very promising forward at the start of a senior career, who did not let himself down with his football skills in the last World Cop, when a certain personage was managing the Netherlands side and he has scored 21 goals for PSV Eindhoven this current season.

I know it's not real, but I signed him on football manager and he was incredible! A potentially good signing if he replicates his PSV form.

I'll take courage from that anecdote then Rich ;)

Everton 0...Sunderland 2

This somewhat unexpected result from the Premiership early kick-off match, will certainly add a lot of pressure on other teams striving to avoid relegation.

Burnley are down despite winning at Hull and QPR are as good as down. Looks like it's between Hull City and Newcastle for the last spot.

Crystal Palace 1....Manchester United 2

This leaves Manchester United seven points clear of Liverpool in the race for the fourth league place, with Liverpool having to play their game in hand away to Chelsea tomorrow, which means after that match, that both those two sides will only have two games to play with a maximum of six points to be won from them. Liverpool have a much poorer goal difference

Surprised by the 3-0 defeat by Tottenham Hotspur, away at Stoke City today, to put an end to their fourth place hopes.

With Man City winning 3-0 I can't see QPR coming back

I must admit I was surprised at Plymouth's comeback yesterday, I turned off at half time when they were 2 down and was looking like a rout

QPR down with a whimper here. Talksport are really laying into them

Chelsea should be down to 10 men already but you're not allowed to send a man off within the first 5 minutes or if you're the champions

Aunt Beeb said:
Ian Evatt: Chesterfield captain 'attacked by rival fans'

Chesterfield captain Ian Evatt said he was "punched, kicked and spat on" on the pitch by rival fans after the League One club's defeat at Preston.

Evatt claimed he was attacked after the Spireites were beaten 3-0 in the second leg of their play-off semi-final at Deepdale to lose 4-0 on aggregate.

The 33-year-old used to play for Blackpool, Preston's Lancashire rivals.

...

Disgraceful if true. The idiots are the ones giving all football supports a bad name and should be arrested and made to feel the full force of the law.

I'm a Chelsea fan and I can't argue with that, I thought Andre Marriner had an absolute 'mare' today!

We have a squad of just 21 players at Wycombe, 3 keepers are in that. All available players were in the match day squad, plus it was our keepers full league debut as Matt Ingram hadn't recovered from a leg injury in time. Lately we have only been able to name 4 subs due to injuries and suspensions, plus after last seasons escape, we was not too disheartened to finish 4th.

19 years it be next season that Oldham will be playing League one football (or third division)

As for new manager I'm not sure just yet as I'm prefer someone who already been manager and I wouldn't mind Dowie to become our new manager but I hope Kelly do well for us and hopefully get us out of League One or challenge the play offs next season just like Johnson do for us before leaving for Barnsley midway through the season.

You are welcome to John Sheridan, despite our league position quite a few Plymouth fans would like to see him go back up north and not come back.

I was gutted by Argyle's performance on Saturday although take nothing away from Wycombe they were so much better all over the pitch. Can't see Argyle scoring two goals without reply at Adams Park (despite doing it earlier in the season).

The atmosphere from an almost full house at Home Park was wonderful, for all the 90+ minutes. Just a shame we have a mountain to climb to progress further.

I was suprised Chesterfield were so outclassed in their Leage 1 semi's. They have a good side and special mention to Drew Talbot who was on loan at Plymouth earlier this season. His performances at Argyle were outstanding and he is a good player.

His constant moaning on his interviews gets on my nerves, he is always so negative.

Just read in the Blackpool Evening Gazette that the fans and bookies favourite is ex Blackpool manager, Ian Holloway, they also want Steve Thompson back at the club.

What a brilliant game it was too. Like two boxers slugging it out. :)

How often will a team score 5 goals away from home and lose the tie?

Really glad I chose to watch that game over the Arsenal one.

On a personal note, this week is going soooo slow. I can't believe it's only Tuesday.

Entertaining game tonight but the final outcome was never in doubt once Barca scored

I could about 3 minutes of the game early in the second half and Neymar could have seen red in that short time if referees actually punished simulation. I shudder to think what he got away with over 90 mins

Any truth to the scurrilous rumour that Neymar has been watching multiple DVD of Ashley Young?....:D:D:D

In 1995, in a Premier League game between Blackburn Rovers and Leeds United, the referee sent off the Blackburn Rovers goalkeeper, Tim Flowers, after only 72 seconds of play.

Real Madrid 1....Juventus 1

So "Twinkletoes" et al do not qualify for a Champions League final place against their arch enemy....nor does it seem that they will be Champions of La Liga this season.

Noting all the recent Spanish criticism of Gareth Bale (who still cannot speak Spanish fluently), will these two matters leave him in a "delicate" situation?

Bale will be back in the premier league next year. I just hope he gets his inner ear problem (the same one Ashley Young seems to have) fixed before he comes back.

Tickets arrived yesterday. Getting really nervous now. I'd take a scrappy, boring 1-0 win rather than a game like Swindon v Sheff U, don't think my heart could take that.

I'm heading down on the train on Saturday afternoon and staying at my brothers for the weekend, who lives in Godstone in Surrey (nearest train station is Oxted though). To do the train trip on the day would be a bit of a nightmare as it is a bus replacement service between Grimsby and Doncaster and the first train (bus) out of Grimsby doesn't arrive at Kings Cross until 12:33 (if it's on time) as kick-off is 2pm it would be a bit of a rush to get across London to Wembley and although you could do it quite easily there would be no time to soak up any pre-match atmosphere and have a couple of pints before the game. Again, going back, to leave time for any possible extra-time and penalties, you don't get back to Grimsby until about 11pm with the bus replacement service still on the go.

On the Sunday morning I'm meeting 7 Exeter fans who are coming up for the game at Paddington, a quick brekkie and a couple of pints before heading onto Wembley.

Train back home on Monday having consumed copious quantities of alcohol on Sunday afternoon/evening, hopefully in celebration rather than to drown my sorrows.

I'll be dreaming of that away end at Accrington Stanley on Saturday night.
