The club is well managed from a financial point of view, what they aren't doing is taking the Freddie Sheppard approach to management which is to over splurge millions on semi skilled footballers who fail to perform.

They performed well for several years, Newcastle United were in the Champions League as late as the 2003/04 season.

The issue was that, after Robson, they splurged millions on semi-skilled managers. If you want to wreck a club Graeme Souness is your man, and Souness did his job admirably.

To be fair to him he did a really good job at Blackburn. Also won them their most recent trophy too.

True, but he was very close to getting the sack by the time Newcastle came calling.

I have a sneaky feeling Newcastle are going down. I should pop down the bookies really

I have a sneaky feeling Man Utd are going to have their holiday head on and lose to Hull, and Newcastle allowing in a late late goal to send them down

Question: Only 6 men have played for Newcastle, Sunderland and Middlesbrough. Can you name them?

Bonus: Only one of those has captained all three clubs- Which?

Double bonus: Who has played for the most north east clubs?

Shay Given, no idea about the rest though.

Good brainteaser there DarloRich - I can think of someone who has played for 2 in Mark Viduka (Middlesbrough + Newcastle), as well as Danny Simpson (Sunderland + Newcastle), but 3, no :(

Closest I got was Julio Arca, who I believe captained both Sunderland and Middlesbrough, but never went near Newcastle.

Who set this quiz?! So infuriating. :?

I can think of quite a few that played for both Newcastle and Sunderland:
Andy Cole
Lee Clark
Robbie Elliott
Chris Waddle
Danny Simpson

Did any of them play for Boro at all?

Similarly Gazza and Kieron Dyer both played for Newcastle and Boro AFAIK but not the black cats.

It's gonna be some obscure player from before WW2, is it?

Stan Anderson captained all 3.

I can only find 13 that played for both Newcastle and Sunderland, and apart from Stan, none appear to have also played for Middlesbrough.

Quite a few of the 13 DID also play for Hartlepool though.

Stan Anderson captained all 3.

Didn't he also manage one of those teams?

My colleague, a Boro fan, says Alan Foggen (who?).

Newcastle United......1967-1971.......61 appearances
Middlesbrough..........1972-1976.....115 appearances
Sunderland..............1976-1977.........8 appearances
Hartlepool United......ON LOAN.........18 appearances

Lets hope so, I think most people agree that the Sid James's Park comedy club deserve relegation. Apart from those two games it's a load of fairly meaningless fixtures today.

Irrespective of any other fixture, the Newcastle United team have home advantage against West Ham United, which does tend to ask the question if the team, in front of their own supporters, does not give 100% effort to ensure that they retain a place in the Premiership next season, then this will be a very sad day for the club and an insult to their fans.

Some of their own fans admit they deserve relegation, if they survive I don't think there will be any celebrating nor chants of "John Carver is a football genius"

I think they will survive but I really hope I am wrong!

I'm glad there's nothing riding on today's game but if Arsenal play like they are doing today we're going to have our work cut out next week

Despite all of the protestations, it seems Ashley has no intention of going anywhere!

And as expected, Allardyce has gone.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/32863888

West Ham have announced manager Sam Allardyce is to leave the Hammers after four years at the Premier League club.

The 60-year-old oversaw the Hammers' promotion from the Championship in 2012 and subsequent top-flight survival.

But the former Bolton Wanderers, Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United boss was never universally popular with the east London side's supporters.

West Ham say they have a shortlist of possible replacements, and will make "significant transfer funds" available.

In a statement, joint chairmen David Sullivan and David Gold said: "We would like to start by thanking Sam Allardyce for his valuable work since arriving at the Boleyn Ground four years ago.

"He leaves the club in a considerably better state then when he arrived and, for that, the board are truly grateful."

Leicester City 5...Queens Park Rangers 1

Just goes to show what a remarkable performance was consistently put together over the last nine matches of the season by Leicester City from what looked like a totally lost position with only those nine games still left to play. The comprehensive win today, in front of their own supporters "put the icing on the cake"

One might query their tactics, etc, up to that point, but the ability to turn matters around when it counted is something to be admired. They actually finished the season in 14th position on 41 points.

You may not like their manager or his methods, but at least he motivated his players when the need was at its greatest.
