Which has led to some ridiculous stuff to get matches on - do you remember the cup match at Bognor Regis where they parked cars on the pitch to try and thaw it out?
Yes it was almost as science denying as some of the crazy stuff we’ve seen over the least few years.

Boston 2 Gloucester 2. Dodgy penalty in the 93rd minute saves the day. Some of the antics by Gloucester players were an absolute disgrace during the penalty. Constantly scuffing up the penalty spot etc.

The flip side has been certain clubs in national league / national league north over the years who insisted they needed to stay overnight before a Saturday 3pm game despite being under two hours drive away.

One would hope that there is a specified (maximum) level of expense that can be claimed under this rule. I'd be interested to see how this is actually set up in the league's rules.

In the event of a match being postponed where one club is found to be at fault, then if the visiting club has set off, full travelling expenses and meal allowances may be claimed, and, in exceptional circumstances, the cost of overnight accommodation for up to 18 persons.

And torrential rail is deemed to be the fault of the home club?
Think you mean torrential rain. ;)

It had been raining heavily overnight in Greater Manchester on Saturday morning. Seems to me that Altrincham FC didn't have a pitch inspection until it was too late, by which time Bromley FC were already well on their way.

It'll be for the National League, however, to determine whether the home club were actually at any fault.

Indeed!

Well, that's not what @VauxhallandI suggested in post #29,519 (although I suspect that it was a downpour!):
There was a huge downfall in the morning which didn’t have long enough to drain away. It was also double the predicted amount.

Bromley will have set off before the down pour and they will be compensated

It'll be for the National League to determine, however, whether the home club were actually at fault.
So, it's not automatic as suggested above - that seems fairer. Thanks for the detail you've provided.

In situations like that the league expect the home club to find out the away team’s departure time, and if practicable get a local ref who is qualified at the requisite level to come and do an inspection. Halifax do it a lot in winter, generally about 8:30am

I appreciate that a club should use its best endeavours to carry out pitch inspections at the earliest reasonable opportunity but sometimes the weather doesn't co-operate. And at the same time there are occasions where games are called off early and then clubs get criticised for not waiting because conditions have improved.

Indeed its a tough line to walk.

Whilst apparently it had been raining all week the pitch was ok, it was the double the expected amount on th Saturday morning that really scuppered it. This would have been after they left for sure and the president was that after spending a truck load of cash on the drainage that it would hold out as it has done in the Winter and half it has been there.

Turned out to be the wrong call but not an un-calculated gamble

That doesn't sound like a gamble at all. If you get heavy rain the game remaining playable can simply depend on how long the rain lasts and how long before kick-off it eases or stops. Even the best drainage can be overwhelmed.

[Second-place Gainsborough Trinity in the Premier Division of the Northern Premier League would be even better placed if their home form matched their away form.

HOME : Won 3 - Drawn 6 - Lost 2

AWAY : Won 8 - Drawn 3 - Lost 1]

So would second from bottom Liversedge

Home W1 D0 L10 Pts 3

Away W4 D2 L4 Pts 14

Fulham 2 ... Chelsea 1

Yet another bad result for Chelsea just a few days after being beaten 4-0 by Manchester City in the FA Cup and to top it all, new loan signing Joao Felix was sent off for a reckless challenge before the hour mark.

Just on my way home from the game now -- thoroughly enjoyed that

Northern Premier League...Premier Division

FC United of Manchester 4 ... Hyde United 4

Considering the recent weather has been poor, this match always attracts a good attendance and a total of 1,764 was recorded today. Goals galore in the first half and it was 3-3 at half time. Both sides added another goal to their teams tally in the second half.

Home W1 D0 L10 Pts 3

Away W4 D2 L4 Pts 14
Did I read right in todays results. Did Liversedge really beat table-topping South Shields 1-0?....or was it Guisley who beat them?

Looks like we'll have another winter world cup in 2030...

Good I found the quality far better than usual as players were fresh rather than playing at the end of a season in 30 - 40 degrees and with the next being in North America with Mexico as a host it'd make sense to move that outside summer too.
As the Southern Hemisphere hosts already play World Cups in Winter, Summer World Cups might be the odd ones.

FA Trophy: Southend 2 v Darlington 1

Darlington took an early lead through Jack Lambert at Roots Hall but were pegged back quickly. We then rode our luck for large parts of the game before conceding a winner with just about the last kick. Moments before Darlo had a guilt edged opportunity to win the game but spurned it.

The game was marred by a serious injury to Darlo defender Paddy Almond who went off after collapsing in the second half with what was thought to be a serious concussion. He was assessed at the ground and as he was deteriorating he was rushed to hospital where a scan found a bleed on the brain. he was then transferred to a London hospital for an emergency operation which thankfully on arrival was not required.

He is currently still in hospital in London under observation but his condition is said to be improving. It was great to see there was no messing about and he was immediately removed from the field following attention on the pitch.

Altrincham draw Bracknell away in the FA Trophy.

They play at Sandhurst which is an odd place for its position in not having a direct rail link from London

The Robins vs The Robins?

P.S. Has Sandhurst station (on the North Downs line) ever had a direct train service into London?

P.P S. Got to be some thirty miles from Central London. Does everywhere in the Home Counties expect to have a direct rail link into the capital?

That‘s highly likely, because the route was built by the South Eastern - mileages through Sandhurst are counted from zero at Charing Cross…

Winchester City are actually going there in a couple of weeks, which I can divulge as it is too late for any strike to be called.
