Depends what you want, there is OpenBVE which is fiddly but good for train routes (mainly fictional really), also there is SimSig if you want to pretend to be a signaller :D

First you install the program, then you google helplessly until you find a route and train, then you copy the route files into a specific folder, the objects that make up the map into another, and a train into a third folder. I believe the newest versions have some sort of easier to install packs but not for many routes :(

As a regular OpenBVE user, it's not that hard to find routes and stock. Here are some good links:

BVE4Trains (UK stock some with externals) - https://sites.google.com/a/bve4trains.com/bve4trains/

BVE TMD (Class 27, 73, 50, 56, 55, 101 and 104 to name a few) - http://bvetmd.org.uk/index.htm

Celtic Train Sim (Irish route and stock, including some help from me) - http://www.celtictrainsim.com/

Railsimroutes (A useful guide to installing OpenBVE, along with Cross City route) - http://www.railsimroutes.co.uk/openbve/index.php

openBVE Routes (Edingburgh - Aberdeen) - http://www.gotopcs.net/openbve.htm

Trainsimstuff (the excellent Network West Midlands route) - http://www.trainsimstuff.org/

Two forums are helpful as well: http://bveworldwide.unlimitedboard.com/forum
http://www.bve-terminus.org/forum/index.php?sid=1b94609fab5557da8fec715576f259b1

And finally, BVE Routes Wiki - http://bve.shoutwiki.com/wiki/Main_Page
And rolling stock - http://openbverollingstock.wikia.com/wiki/OpenBVE_Rolling_stock_Wiki

Forgot to mention, a version of OpenBVE, now out-of-development, is available from BVE4Trains

I've installed OpenBVE and I went on the Irish trains site and I have a route file. Where do I extract the file to?

OK - first off for a route you need three sets of files - Route, Sound and Objects. This will give you everything.

Once you've downloaded them, follow the below:

1) Go to your main OpenBVE folder (something like C:\Program Files\Open BVE or wherever)
2) Create a folder called 'Open BVE Content'
3) Within that folder (Open BVE\Open BVE Content), create two folders. One should be called 'Railway' and the other 'Train'. We'll deal with trains later.
4) Go to the Railway folder.
5) Again, create 3 new folders. These should be called 'Route', 'Sound' and 'Object'
6) Extract each of the downloaded files, using 7Zip (http://www.7-zip.org/) into the relevant folders, e.g. BWRObjects -> Object etc.

You should end up with this within the 'Railway' folder (ignore LU signals)

Now we move onto trains.

Generally, it is a simple case of extracting the downloaded files contents into the 'Train' folder. But for Graymac's trains, things are a little different. I'll use the Class 201 as my example.

1) Go to the 'Trains Download' page on Celtic Train Sim. Leave it open.
2) Download '201 Loco (all versions)'
3) Now download the coaches and wagons that are listed below. I have a complete set, but for the 201 you need: Mark 4, Mark 3, Mark 2 and Container Flat
4) Extract ALL those files to the Open BVE\Open BVE Content\Train folder.

The same goes for the other locos and stock, but the units are as normal. If in doubt, please look at this guide or PM me - http://celtictrainsim.com/ctsdownloads/publications/install_train.pdf

In Summary, your folder structure should look like this:
Open BVE\Open BVE Content\Railway\Route
Open BVE\Open BVE Content\Railway\Sound
Open BVE\Open BVE Content\Railway\Object
Open BVE\Open BVE Content\Train

Folder Structure:

That won't work. What you need to do is, on the 'Quick Reply' here, click on the little picture (second from right centre) and navigate to that. It should then upload onto here.
Sorry, I'll do that once I return from my holiday.
