Just hearing from a local news outlet (Bro Radio) in Barry (South Wales) that "a freight train has overturned" on the Barry Docks line. Unfortunately I cant verify this as Im in not in Barry at the moment but i'm asuming the train involved is the freightliner to/from Wentloog

4O57 1329 Wentloog (Freightliners) to Southampton M.C.T. seems to have got underway on time at roughly the time of your post: https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:H07928/2023-10-31/detailed, so not sure it can be that...

OP is referring to the 'trip' working between Wentloog and Barry:

Thanks Mark - I hadn't spotted that. I presume this is a low speed derailment within or close to the Dow Chemicals siding / loading point? I'm not very familiar with the area...

The train made it down, but not back - minor derailment inside the ABP boundary.

Just out of interest. What they do with the containers once the train arrives? I can't see any crane equipment. Wentloog isn't far away either.

Usually specialised "reach stackers" rather than forklifts:

So was the original report of it "overturning" just journalistic exaggeration?

Ah yes of course. Now you mention it I can see one in the yard on google maps.

Do the containers go there for local distribution by road? Is there any outgoing load when the train leaves?

No local knowledge here I'm afraid, I've never been there.

I believe that the containers are for Dow Corning. EWS / DB used to have the contract to run them from So'ton to Barry. The commodity was described as 'Silicon metal'. Grey shiny chips, from the odd one that escaped. Part of the deal was to do with the weight. We could load them 2 up on a 67 foot flat, but road transport could only carry 1 per trailer.

The train often runs completely empty in both directions, but then on other occasions runs full with no apparent pattern.

I know Wentlogg are often keen to see it out of their terminal to free up space which is at a premium least days.
