I live in Plymouth, Devon. Does anybody know if Freightliner ever recruit this far down the country please?

Many thanks,

Bristol or Southampton are your closest I believe. Both of which are obviously too far

The only FOC that's just within an hour of Plymouth is DB at St Blazey, but it's extremely unlikely they will recruit for that depot as freight work down in Cornwall (and Devon) is near non existent.

Your best bet is GWR and XC.

However you could argue Taunton is driveable in an hour or so from parts of plymouth that are close to the a38.....

St Blazey is less than zero chance, so as others have said go for GWR or XC
Been watching for an external recruitment with FL for trainees at Taunton for eight years..... never happens.

I guess probably dead man's shoes type location. Plenty of passenger depots nearby, such as Bristol , Exeter , Plymouth. Get your key then apply again for freight.

There's only about 10 drivers based at Taunton, and they don't have much work of their own when the HOBC isn't in the area.

Thanks to all for the above info

I’ve just passed my psychometrics privately so now just desperate to get any job I can with GWR or XC and apply internally which I’ve been told is the quickest route in, pardon the pun

They both hardly ever advertise. Unfortunately, I inexcusably missed the advert for XC trainee pool in Feb (don’t ask)

I did the tests privately to confirm if I had the aptitude to get through the tests. Having passed, I’m sufficiently encouraged enough to abandon my current job in pursuit of TD now

I assume those already in the industry would concur that the best route in, besides biding my time externally, is to just grab any job with XC / GWR and go for an internal TD trainee role which a few of my contacts at these TOC’s tell me come up far more frequently than externally advertised positions?

Yes. Get in, gain experience in the industry and meet people and hear things that you might not if you’re outside. Maybe even be prepared to relocate if you want in bad enough.
