Future Of Caledonian Sleeper Class 86s/87

87002 was noted on the blocks at P1 at EUS last night with CS sleeper stock. 92043 was the train engine.

The current TOPS for the 3 AC electrics are:
86101 GBCH WEMBLEYTC WEMBLEYTC E N
86401 GBCH WEMBLEYTC WEMBLEYTC E N
87002 GBCH EUSTON EUSTON E N
All of them have been based at Wembley since early May (when 86101 arrived from Polmadie to join 86401 and 87002 already at Wembley).
I'm guessing only time will tell what happens to them.

87002 was noted in Platform 1 at Euston on 7th May with ECS for the Highland Sleeper.
It's now the regular loco at Euston for the Highlander ECS.

Sorry to dig this up again. I take it the 86s and 87s have been replaced with excess 92s now that the new stock has come in?

Nope. The Highland Sleeper still uses the old stock so they can still appear on empty stock moves

I think it was used this morning to move the empties back to Wembley InterCity Depot

Does anyone know if 86401 and 87002 are still used by GBRF/Caledonian Sleeper? I know 86101 is still doing ECS around Wembley/Euston but I haven't seen the other two recently.

87002 last worked ECS at Euston/Wembley on morning of 14 June. It's been at Wembley since on low hours (to next Exam) doing the odd bit of shunting / stock heating. However, it did finally have an A Exam this week just gone.
86101 has been the ECS loco at the London end for the Highlander (5S95 pm / 5M16 am) solidly for the past 3 months since 87002 took its breather. (The only time it's not done ECS has been the few times a 90 has been on it as part of moving the Skodas to and from Edinburgh on the rear of 1S25/1M16.)
86401 went off lease at the end of March and has not left Wembley since. It last worked on 6 March 2019, hauling the Lowlander morning ECS back to Wembley (5M11).

Since they are currently used on Highland Sleeper ECS, I'm surprised nobody's suggested using them on Night Riviera ECS once the Highland Sleeper goes over to mark 5s. If I recall correctly, since much of Old Oak Common shut the up Night Riviera has a class 57 attached to the rear at Reading which then hauls the ECS back to Reading for stabling during the day. The reverse happens in the evening. Couldn't an 86 or 87 be used in place of that 57? If the sleeper is stopped at Reading for long enough, they could even swap the train engine for an electric east of Reading but leaving the 57 on that end is probably easier.

You'd also have a completely new type of traction which would require drivers and maintenance crews to learn/get familiar with. With the Caledonian Sleepers, there was already a core of drivers and maintenance crews (at Willesden) who had knowledge of the 86/87s (extensive in several cases).
It's not an unfeasible idea, but operationally/financially it probably wouldn't stack up compared to using loco all of the same type (as they do now) that gives flexibility across what is a small fleet and ensures efficiency re driver training, maintenance etc.

Not sure I understand this. If the 57 fails the 86/87 could presumably run round and haul the train into Paddington just as well as the 57 on the rear currently could. Or does the 57 or the rear actually stay on for the whole journey between London and Penzance and not just between London and Reading?
Ah, yes now I see. I was thinking if the main loco failed after Reading on the up service it wouldn't be any more problematic than with a 57 on the rear. But yes, if the 57 on the front failed before Reading on the down service a diesel ECS loco on the rear could run round and take over, whereas an electric wouldn't get you very far.

It seems that Electric Traction Ltd have today announced the sale of 86101 and 87002 to Locomotive Services Ltd, no decision has yet been made on 86401

Is it definitely for repainting? All the recent heritage diesels were repainted at Crewe Diesel?
Might get new paint jobs whilst they're there, but suspect they're going to Eastleigh for something mechanical as well/instead. New wheels perhaps...
