Hello everyone,

I am 26 years old and want a job on the railways, I am struggling to figure out how I can get a PTS card with a sponsor. I have read a few articles on getting one but the involve working for network rail, completing a course etc if someone with more knowledge can inform me on the best strategy of getting a PTS card it will be great help.

I am currently unemployed and want a job on the railways.

Are you after agency work or working for a big company? I should imagine most employers would put their staff through PTS training if they’re worth working for.
Agency work might require you to have PTS already.
What do you actually want to do on the railway?

working for a big company is my idea, I am completely lost for what I want to do exactly on the railways as there are a few options I am currently looking at.

I have no experience on railways so I am aware I would have to get a pts card before applying for jobs online etc..

What’s the difference with agency work and big company.

I wouldn’t mind either tbh.

I am completely new to this but I am a manual type worker and I see myself working on the railways.

My suggestion would be to find entry level positions for the big contractors, NR, or a major project. There are also the centres of Rail Innovation (they have a fancier name) which may offer training. Have a look on LinkedIn, and research engineering firms like Balfour Beatty and Amey to see who's hiring and who isn't. Look at EWR or HS2 as well, they may have pointers on their websites about how to work on their railways.

What would be a good role to start in for someone who has no experience in the rail. Also I have looked in the websites provided however these seem to be actual job roles where they expect you to have a pts already

I can't say, unfortunately. I joined the rail industry on a training position for an office role, but it was explicitly advertised as such.

Have you tried writing to the hiring managers and explaining that you'd like to apply but don't have the PTS certificate, and whether they might be able to help?
