Or to be really controversial, given the multitude of routes available between Glasgow and Edinburgh, not operate at all. Not as if you'd have to wait long for a connecting train....

But that means Auntie Doris & Uncle Bert will have to change trains at Edinburgh on their holiday to Glasgow from Taunton and we can't be having that ;)

I've thought similar for some time - or rather what I think would be better was if XC terminated at Edinburgh, with an enhanced "via Motherwell" service provide by ScotRail - at least hourly, and probably based on an streamlined version of the very poorly-timed existing ScotRail service via Wishaw. Its utterly bonkers that Motherwell has such a poor service to Edinburgh, that has to be left in the hands of XC to provide the peak-hour service, whilst Cumbernauld is now getting 2tph to Edinburgh. If anything, if it could be pathed, a 2tph Edinburgh - Carstairs - Wishaw - Motherwell - Glasgow C looks justifiable.

I wasn't really thinking so much for going Glasgow to Edinburgh, more Glasgow to places such as Newcastle and York for which direct services are very useful.

Would have to disagree - if I arrive in Central at 1840 on a Saturday night, I will get the 1900 XCountry which terminates at Waverley at 2000.
Saves me the walk to Queen Street and is generally quieter and certainly more comfortable than any other route or train.
20 minutes well spent in The Beer House!

Instead of changing at New St and getting to Glasgow an hour earlier?

My vision would be a joint Scotrail/TPE service using a further build of these 397s. An hourly semifast from Glasgow to at least Newcastle, calling at Motherwell, possibly not Wishaw because I think the link is single tine and slow, Carluke rather than Carstairs (larger population), Kirknewton (for Livingston) and all the expected stations to Newcastle. Indeed if it leaves Edinburgh immediately after the .00 LNER departure there should be space for at least a Reston stop.
After a pause to let the .30 overtake, it could continue, calling at stations to York, using the slow lines in the Vale to call at Thirsk again allowing overtaking.
In a sane world, where the wires were completed to Leeds, it would continue to there, and indeed to Bradford.
This would release XC stock for its overcrowded core.

Could Trans Pennine Express order more 802's and extend their new Edinburgh via the east coast services to Glasgow?

I think we're getting off track here. This is a thread about GNER to Glasgow not possible TPE services to Glasgow or bringing the services back to the LNER operation.

I really missed the GNER and heirs services from Kings Cross to Glasgow Central

You could pretty much guarantee that they were always significantly cheaper than buying an Advance ticket to Edinburgh. ;)

I miss it as well, I have fond memories of getting GNER down to York. I remember being on a service which didn't stop at Darlington (quite a few didn't then), and flying past at 90mph. Happy times! :)
