Arh congrats on your job.
I'm starting to apply now.
Dreading the maths bit though... was never any good with maths.
That's even if my application gets anywhere.
Would you give me sum tips on correct things to say and write etc..
This would be my dream job even for 50 quid a week .
I earn a good wage now but I'm not happy in the work I do.
Thanks.. ;)

Congratulations. I applied the other day and have got the invite to the assessment today! As someone who has been through it do you have any tips? I have looked through the previous threads but would really appreciate any specifics for the Southern process.

Good luck with your training.

I had my assessment at Knollys House.

The dots test was paper-based and the practice material is very similar to the real thing.

At the interviews they want you to be to demonstrate that you err on the side of caution in all of your actions, never making assumptions, so what ever you are asked describe how you would solve the situation by being thorough and sensitive. Make you you learn as much about the company as possible; be polite, smile, and take your time in answering - don't feel rushed! Pausing for thought is indicative of being calm under pressure.

Thanks for replying so quickly. As someone who has passed how did you find the reaction tests? As I am 42 I am slightly worried that I may not be as fast as when I was 20! I was also wondering if the test is being done so quickly after the closing date to hopefully fill up a course in the Autumn?

Years ago I did an assessment for Citibank where the intention was not for you to complete the questions you were given. They would rather you only answer 70% but get more correct than rush and get more wrong. Do any of the tests fall into this type?

Thanks again for any help.

When does your training start?

When does your training start?

My training starts the 19th August.

The fault finding test falls into the category you describe, impossible to complete all of them, but by being there you pressure yourself into hurrying and possibly make mistakes. One chap on the day only completed 5 out of 20 and still made it to the reactions test afterward.

Your age is actually factored in to the scoring and pass mark. I practised my reactions with 'Bop-It', but I spent many a year playing arcade machines in my youth which made things a little easier. Having said that, there were 3 others there that were in that 40-50 bracket and they all passed it too. So it's just about not panicking when it speeds up and just keeping yourself composed.

All the best - stay positive.

Thanks for the advice. Its good to know others in my age group passed. I used to play stacks of games when I was younger andnplay games on my smart phone. Are there any games out there on Android which would be useful too?

Cheers

Not really, not that I know of anyway.

As others have advised, it may be best to keep your feet on the ground by the peddles of the Reaction Machine. I kept my feet hovering over the peddles for fear of not being able to press them in time. This just led to me getting shaky legs after a couple minutes, which only added to the pressure and tension (not good!).

As much as I don't like it I believe there is or am lead to believe there is an automatic sift. When I applied last July is was on closing day with literally minutes to spare and I heard back first thing the next morning and was on a course within three weeks. However there were people who had waited a while on the same course. Not sure if this was down to my rail experience or not.

Southern by far is the most efficient firm for recruiting trainees. I've had two offers to start training when almost finished training and there are two still pending and I'm already passed out and qualified.

Good luck to all that have applied, del ill see you around

Good luck everyone!!! Enjoy the training, it will seem like you haven't a hope in Hells chance at first, but it will be fine! ;)

You will have to let us know which trainer you get, I have a feeling it will probably be John though.

Hi JB, so far so good just done the PTS - 'Competent' and got my SwID card yesterday. Today, done my 1st day of 'Cab Experience'; saw the PM for a timesheet and saw where VicPaul has his pigeon hole for his mail - "It's quite full by the way matey - have a look!" lol

Hi JB, I'm getting what's been called 'proper' training (no iPads here), with a gent called X, so far so good. Done the PTS - 'Competent' and got my SwID card yesterday. Today, done my 1st day of 'Cab Experience' with Y; saw the PM for a timesheet and saw where VicPaul has his pigeon hole for his mail - "It's quite full by the way matey - have a look!" lol

Are your instructors/mentors happy with you mentioning them by name on here? No harm if so - but I know I wouldn't be...

Do you know what.. Good point, it didn't occur that it might offend. *Edits* in order.

Ah I saw you yesterday. You had another trainee with you too?

Where are the other guys in your class based?

Spotted! Yep I was the fella looking sheepish and tagging along for the ride. Like Vic said, the other guy was clocking up his hours. It was good to observe though, insightful. DI's seem to be thin on the ground though, for Fridays at least so may swap a Friday or two to Saturdays it was suggested.

My group is a mixture of internals ands externals. There's one other fella who's based at Vic with me; two at Selhurst, and the rest Coastal - Brighton and somewhere else (I forget where). I can say they're are a good bunch!
