Has 720137 got into trouble ?

Pics below show RTT entry with a box at the top saying :-

En-route, reduced speed
At Manningtree
Route set to between Manningtree and Ipswich
Following 1P22 1100 London Liverpool Street to Norwich.

That is a new one on me.

The "en route, reduced speed" shows you the aspect of the next signal.
If you were approaching a red signal it would say "next signal at red"
If you're on greens it would say "en-route".

It's powered by the NR Open Data Feeds.

I would like to ask a question. Since GA has built more 720s than originally planned, would GA have to give up or sublease some of their 720s to other operators? That is the question.

No one else seems to want the spare 720s. There are still 12 that haven't been used by Greater Anglia, and no one else has taken them on. Clearly they can only be used on routes with overhead electrification.

GA hasnt built (ordered) more 720s than planned.
If they were not planned they would not be built!
They ordered (hence built) what they thought they require pre Covid!

Covid changed GA markets

Wishful thinking but c2c could take a few units, seeing as they already operate 720s and the 357s will be undergoing a refurb.

It’s often said that GA has (or will have) surplus 720s but they also don’t have enough 745s so that needs to be considered. I believe GA is making the DfT money so there probably isn’t the same pressure to cut costs as there is at some other TOCs.

As for sending some GA 720s to c2c, why bother they’d probably spend most of the time parked at East Ham or Shoeburyness

C2C getting 720s in the first place, was debatable. Yes they had promised new trains, but reusing existing stock not needed elsewhere would have made more sense, and could have been justified with some sweeteners for C2C customers.

Conveniently for bashers, 720139 + 720144 are now paired together on 1K27 0724 Southend Victoria to London Liverpool Street...
502 now on it’s own to enter service next, as all the other 9x still need to be transferred from derby.

720141 Derby
720143 Derby
720502 Ilford
720503 Derby
720504 Derby
720505 Derby
720510 Derby
720516 Derby
720534 Derby

Surely must be three or four scheduled come down to Wembley/Ilford shortly or are most of the current moves being focused on the 730s?

As 502 is the second one built, so has been languishing for many years, I hope this means that the first ones are not in too bad of a condition ?.

My guess is that the 720/1s have the best chance of heading South first (as in before the first build 720/5s). The 720/1s will just have finishing to do including any faults BUT will be healthy in terms of time spent festering in sidings (cold storage).

I wonder what holds up the 720/5s. Condition, need for more modifications as earlier build OR parts - what is the spares situation like ?.

What’s the difference between the /1 and the /5?
Nothing as far as am aware.
The /1s were originally intended to be 10 car sets I believe. But order then changed to make whole fleet all 5 car.

Essentially nothing. The /1s were intended to be built as 10 car units but the new depot wasn't built so the order was changed to 5 car units. The number sequence beyond 589 would have 'bumped into' the c2c units starting at 601 so they retained the numbers in the sequence starting at 101.

Ref: Post 3051, it appears that the 730s have been given preference as they are required for service, whereas the remaining 720s are now just a "nice to have". The same applies to the 701s as construction of these was started years before the 730s. If my calculations are correct there are only 3 x 730/2 left to be released from Derby, whereas there are 9 x 720s and 3 x 701s still to appear.

That was my assumption to albeit not based on any actual evidence to confirm other than what has moved South from Derby etc in the recent past.

720502 is on its own on the inbound Braintree and the 8.53 to Southend. I agree 140 was shown on RTT as working with 502 but not shown on RTT now.

Hope this helps
