Anyone got the Class 158 diagrams for these routes? .
They are now shown on RTT. It should be fairly straightforward to work it out from that.

0923 / 1023 / 1723 / 1823 from Portsmouth
0850 / 2015 from Weymouth

Timed to ensure they aren't working towards the Bristol area in the peak hours.

The earlier of the two Portsmouth diagrams appears to be far more reliable.

I see both the 1330 and 1430 to Portsmouth Harbour (1723 and 1823 returns) depart Cardiff Central from the window in my adjacent University building, most days, and 1330 has been a 158 (booked 4 car but occasionally short formed) almost every weekday since September without fail, whereas 1430 often produces a Turbo.

Thanks. I was on the 1722 from Bristol to Southampton on Saturday and that was a 3 car 158. Made for a more pleasant ride home.

Only if you have a seat, they are very unpleasant trains to stand in. Hence why they avoid the Bristol peaks.
Other than the fact that at least one stopper ( far more affected by dwell times) leaving Temple Meads for the Avon Valley in the pm peak is a 158!

The only regular one I can find (RTT last week) is the 1559 Filton via the curve at Dr Days - which have I missed?

16.15 departure from Parkway (16.40-something from TM) seems to be 158 whenever I’m on it.

Prefer the Class 158s on this route. The Turbos have a feel of commuter train, I can see why they are better for standing. Cant see any other suitable stock , 800s or Castle sets anyone?

In an ideal world, there'd be a more frequent local stopping service (maybe as far as Salisbury to include a station at Wilton) and the Cardiff - Pompey would become more of a limited stop Intercity-style service more suited to Cl.158 operation. If at the same time they were timetabled to follow the London trains on the Bristol - Bath corridor, rather than just preceding them as they currently do East/Southbound, do, the "Bristol - Bath only" loadings would be less of a problem. Unloading / loading a non-COVID peak hour train at Bath through 158 doors is a slow process!

Have seat reservations and catering been scrapped on Cardiff to Portsmouth services?

It does seem daft that there is an issue with Bristol-Bath loadings on this route, when there is a frequent service of long Intercity trains available to take the load. I know timetable-based solutions can be very difficult to implement, but this does seem to be a case where such a solution would be worthwhile if it could be done.

The intercity trains only go to Bristol TM, the Pompey/Cardiffs link Bath and Filton which is where many of the commuters go hence why they can be more popular than the IETs.

In the Bristol bound direction the Cardiff’s follow the IETs from Bath and you see people letting the IET go for their direct service.

And in the other direction, they leave Temple Meads a few minutes before the IET ( and from a closer platform to the entrance!), so pick up a disproportionate number of Temple Meads joiners.
