800101 had an outing from North Pole depot to Reading West last night, then headed back to Acton and on to Old Dalby.

Video of it passing through Twyford https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7lR5wfj54Q

Realtime Trains details http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/K97582/2016/05/09/advanced

Interesting that it's booked to sit in or near Reading West for 40 or so Minutes. I presume it sat on one of the Chords rather than going into the station and reversing there?

Do we know if this was a one off or the start or regular visits?

Photo of it at Reading last night.

From those timings, it looks as though it can do 125mph on Diesel after all

I'm not so sure; it's booked to take 35 minutes from Old Oak to Reading... Just because RTT says 125mph max doesn't mean it's actually booked to do 125mph unfortunately.

Well, I counted the frames in the video that it took one carriage to pass (when the camera panned round and stayed relatively still) and came out with 55.71m/s, which is around 124mph.

Obviously this isn't a very accurate method but I believe Hitachi have reiterated that they will be able to reach 125mph on diesel, but will not do so in service to reduce maintenance costs.

Looking at the time taken to do Maidenhead to Twyford she averaged ~115mph on this stretch

Confusingly, Reading West Jn is not the junction at Reading West station, it is the junction on the reliefs at the geographic west end of the triangular layout. The junction at the south of the chords is Oxford Rd Jn, not mentioned on RTT.

Yeah I came out with a figure of about 116 frames for the whole train to pass, which at 25fps (downloaded the video to check the frame rate) is 4.64s, so (9x26m) / 4.64 gave me 50.43m/s or 112.8mph. Obviously all a little rough, but I think it travelling in excess of 100mph in that video is pretty much confirmed.

Hey everybody it's been a while since being on here but has anybody got any information on the recruitment or the Doncaster depot.
We (many from nearby) have all applied for team technician back in February and we are all left in the dark.

Any scraps of info or even rumours please.

Aaron.

It sat on the Up Pass Loop adjacent to the TCD.

Yep that would be 800001 or 800002 on test. Both are usually tested coupled together these days but it's either or. If it had a red rear or front coach, that would make it 800002, if not it's definitely 800001.

GWR supposed to be June 2017
ECML some time in 2018

I'd wait a while before asking again, a lot can happen in a year...

Thanks.

Last I heard it was scheduled for Jan or Feb - that was just couple of weeks ago!

Will check back early next year :)

This is a very trivial question but does anyone know why the doors in the leading coaches (the DTSOs) are not in the same position as the middle coaches? I'm mainly talking about the gap between the end of the coach and the rear door, which is larger on the DTSOs than the MSO/TSOs

The driving vehicles have the accessible toilets, and they're located between the carriage end and the door. Since they're bigger than the standard toilets, the door is further in on the driving vehicles than on the intermediate ones. In addition, the driving vehicles don't have any diesel engine underneath and their floor is perfectly flat inside, so there's no problem having the doors further in. On the intermediate vehicles, as the floor needs to slope up slightly to deal with the engine below moving the doors inward is not as easy a task.

is she hanging around there for any length of time? would be nice to see it, and I doubt it'll be coming much further south for the forseable

I'm guessing it's there for comissioning work at Stoke Gifford IEP Depot, just like they had at North Pole. Could be there for a week or so before either returning to Old Dalby for further mainline tests or returning to North Pole IEP depot to await testing in September - my guess being Old Dalby.

What is noticeable is the sound they make as the vehicles pass over rail joints, due to the distance between the bogies and the vehicle ends. I wonder whether the latter will affect their dynamic performance?

What is the reason for the considerable lower bodyside curvature? This appears to be above the point where the C1 loading gauge starts to reduce from 2.82 metres in order to accommodate station platforms, etc.

Will similar commissioning work be needed at Swansea Depot?

As far as I know, every IEP depot needs comissioning work to make sure that they are fully prepared for active service. I do believe the comissioning work at North Pole IEP Depot is complete, and has been for a while in order to tie in to the introduction of the GWR Class 387's which were originally planned to be in service this week.

Saw it in Bristol on the 09:45 to Cardiff outside around the welsh end of the depot, when returning at 17:30, it had gone again

In an article on GW electrification progress in Rail today (p93), there is a paragraph which says IEPs will reach Bristol by August 2017, and will be able to run at 110mph (125mph under the wires).
Is there any confirmation that 110mph will be the maximum permitted under diesel power?
If so the timetable will have to be extended until the wires arrive.
Or is it mis-reporting?

That's not the first time I've heard that, I'm sure similar was reported on the wnxx forum a few weeks ago.
