Has the Burger King at York shut?

Currently breaking a journey at York with the original intention of using the Burger King for lunch, something I've done many times before - but it isn't open. Doesn't seem to be any signage about this and I can't find any immediate news stories about it closing either. Is this the new normal or is this an abberation of some kind? It never seemed very busy so I can believe either.

https://www.burgerking.co.uk/store-locator/store/restaurant_5867 meanwhile seems to reckon it is open from 10am each day still!

Curiouser and curiouser!

I have a 12 minute connection at York on my way back on Friday, if no one else can verify before then then I may have a look. Depends on things running on time of course. My preferred scenario is that my train is late into York so that I miss connection and get delicious delay repay of course. Was a nice 36 minutes late into Kings Cross today, inconveniencing me not one bit but getting a good >£50 out of it - result

Thanks. I guess I'll report it to Google Maps which thinks otherwise!

I wonder what's happened - latest review is only 3 days old.
If it has indeed closed then my guess would be down to the possiblity that the franchisee's licence to operate may have expired and could well be in the process of renewal or fininding another franchisee taking the branch on.

I've also noticed that KFC has closed in Leeds railway station as has the branch in Headingley.

It has had funny opening hours for some time, but I'll try confirm today on way home from work.

It's a shame really because sometimes a burger and chips is what you need. Eventually if too many food options close, you end up with a load of overpriced coffee shops.

I think one thing that went against it (and a lot of similar station outlets) was the lack of anywhere to sit and eat. People generally want to eat in a comfortable environment.

I can confirm it was open earlier today.

(I can also confirm I've never made a purchase from it!)

Like the one in Piccadilly, once is enough to put you off from eating there again! Even after a night on the ale there are far better places calling than an SSP run joint.

Thanks. I will put it down to a one off then. Interestingly @jfollows 's link still shows it as closed.

I had a Burger King in Watford for supper today, it was an odd experience as there was a confronation going on outside (someone very scruffy being held down with a staffy type dog jumping up and down being aggressive). The Burger King locked its doors except to let myself and an Ayrshire(?) sounding stranger out (I judged, and presume he did too, that the danger to ourselves was minimal so long as we weren't stupid enough to intervene, and the police had already been called and indeed arrived a minute or two later).

We both agreed we were pleased we didn't live down south.

With the amount of onlookers filming (must have been 30+) I should imagine there'll be footage of that on the internet sometime later today.

And given your physical form I'm not surprised you've not made a purchase from it. And given mine I assume you're not surprised I have!

Being a local, I don't feel any need to use it, but have noticed that, ever since Covid, it's often shut when you'd expect it to be open and vice versa! There are often queues on Saturday evenings - well, when it's actually open!

I can't say I've used it enormously, I'm not a local it's just been very convenient for me as I don't live near a Burger King (nor frankly would I have one when I can cook myself) but I do take the ECML and like to have a split in where possible to increase my Delay Repay chances... and do love an XL Bacon without Cheese. Odd that it has issues, I would have assumed it was owned by SSP and running to their timetable. Perhaps there's problems with staff retention?

You know, I'm so curious now I'm going to email Burger King. I'll see what they say and pass it on. I doubt it'll be illuminating but it's my duty to the thread!

Amusingly, it's unreasonably difficult to contact Burger King for a comment about this - none of the contact options on their website are appropriate so the only electronic way I can see of doing it is Twitter - so I guess I'll have to ask them next time this works out which might be a few months away. But if anyone else can I guess it'd be interesting.

Only Burger Kings I've used in about 10 years was the one on Sheffield station last September, as soon as I ordered I started to wish I'd gone to McDonalds up the road.

Off topic but I don't use BK for ages. Always seemed too expensive when I went there. Charging £8 for a burger meal way before McDonald's charged that. Even now a burger meal at McDonald's doesn't cost that for a medium.

If i want to spend that sort of money Ill go to uncle Sam's hambuger express choo choo

Their plant based whopper and vegan royal are very good though - much better than some of the chain's non-meat offerings.

My qualm with them is that the standard portion of chips is quite miniscule.

As with many things these days, it pushes you towards using their app. I had a bacon double cheeseburger meal for £4.99 yesterday, and often get a whopper meal for £5.99 using the offers on their app.
I don't know if you can use it with the station outlets though.

I suspect the price will be around double that in an SSP outlet such as in rail stations.

The one at Piccadilly definitely leaves a lot to be desired. If it isn't undercooked things are missing.

I remember a couple of years ago they hadn't any burgers because "someone had forgot to order them".

On the subject of York, due to TPE's excellent new Wakefield service, it's now available to me for earlyish connections, however there aren't vast numbers of breakfast options (I think Burger King gave up on breakfast a while ago).

I attempted my usual go-to of getting breakfast at the nearby Premier Inn, only to be told that "they don't do walk-ins" due to overcrowding. There were three customers in the said restaurant.

So much for the spirit of entrepreneurship and the glorious free market that we're all supposed to genuflect to. They won't even sell you breakfast !

I suppose what I'm really saying is that York needs a good cafe doing fry-ups. Could the former proprietors of the excellent cafe at Huddersfield be coaxed out of retirement I wonder !

I'm both surprised and disappointed to hear "The Longboat" has fallen victim to the idiotic "hotel guests only" policy recently implemented at many Premier Inn restaurants. Over the years, I've had some very enjoyable meals in there with the family - albeit not breakfast.

In America they do French Toast Sticks for breakfast and they are amazing. The absolute highlight of a long and tedious drive from Providence RI to Niagara Falls

Indeed. It was my go-to for breakfast for many years when I was doing some volunteer work in York a few years back.

I don't think I've ever tried French toast ! Perhaps if they introduce it over here.
