BBC are reporting four options to sort the HS2 East Leg unfinished business.
1) Extend it from East Midlands Parkway to Newark via Nottingham alongside the existing live (new track/existing track unknown) to join the ECML then final appoach to Leeds built as originally planned. Appears to be the favourite and cheapest option.
2) Plan announced in november (ie no HS2 trains north of Sheffield and unspecified ECML upgrade.
3) As per 2 but HS2 services go onto Leeds via an "upgraded line south of Leeds known as the Woodlesford Line" No comment is made about whether they intend to reinstate the lifted and built on bit.
4) As Leaked two weeks before the November plan was announced (build N of Rotherham to Leeds and electrify the Erewash Valley to bridge the gap.
"The document, named Strategic Alternatives to High Speed 2, was commissioned by the Department for Transport (DfT)."
Quite why you would run to Newark from Nottingham alongside the existing railway rather than take a more direct new route to, say, Tuxford, that would be little longer, escapes me.
Anyway. Someone got paid for crayoning.....

HS2 plan to join East Coast Mainline at Newark
The scheme would see high-speed trains routed from Nottingham to Newark on their way to the north.
