Highspeed Rail in Portugal

On January 12, 2024, Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa launched the public tender for the first section of the first phase of the Lisbon to Porto highspeed railway line, between Porto and Oiã.

The project includes the reformulation of the Porto-Campanhã railway station, the construction of a new station in Vila Nova de Gaia-Santo Ovídio, a new road-rail bridge over the Douro River and two intersections with the Norte Line at Canelas and Oiã.

It's expected to cost 1.6 billion euros, pending funding from the EU, and the railway infrastructure will be awarded to a public-private partnership for a 30-year contract.

The tender was launched after a majority vote was cast in the Portuguese "Assembly of the Republic" on the 9th of January, as a political commitment to proceed with the construction of the highspeed line.
This was seen as a necessity as a corruption scandal caused the current government to renounce its term, and new elections have been scheduled for March 10, 2024.

On the same day, January 12, 2024, Secretary of State Frederico Francisco visited the work site of the first high-speed railway line under construction in Portugal, between Évora and Elvas.

The round trip covered the first 14km of the 90km railway line, between Évora railway station and the first passing loop for 750m long trains, corresponding to the only section track currently finished.

This project was initially planned to enter service in 2019, but due to design, tendering, and construction delays, the plan currently expects the opening of the 250kph capable railway line between the end of 2024 and mid-2025, with revenue service starting sometime in 2026.
