How could you build extra platforms at York?

Earlier I was thinking about platform 8 (if it became a new through platform) and a potential new cross over so that it could access the Scarborough lines, inspired by a historical cross over that was used to provide access to the sidings where the island platform is now.

Then I realized that...

When HS2 reaches York, the only platforms that it could use are platform 9 & 5. P9 is 437m and P5 is 416m.

So unless we want HS2 to conflict with through services to Scarborough, 6/7/8 will have to be made into through platforms.

Although since only one through line is needed, you could still have two terminating bays, whilst the proposed platform zero will mitigate the loss of the second Leeds facing bay.

The HS2 trains onto the ECML are only specified as 200m sets (unless someone came along and lengthened all the required platforms at York, Darlington and Newcastle)

If this is true, do you know what station services are expected to split at ?

Regarding York, Darlington & Newcastle.

York & Darlington can easily manage 400 meter long services, although in York this would conflict with services using the Scarborough line.

As for Newcastle I don't know what is currently proposed.

Wikipedia’s article reckons York terminating services will split from a Sheffield at East Midlands Hub, whereas Newcastle ones will just be 200m throughout from London and Birmingham.

Wikipedia is correct.

Where has the bridge gone?
That was how York was built, without a bridge!

After reading about it in the document the bridge was first built when the first platform (albeit temporary) was built outside the West Wall.

Which probably explains why it is also rather plain in comparison to North Eastern style footbridges. Personally I think it look like something off a ship.

If money and planning considerations could be overcome, platform 5 and its line could be built out onto the old through line formation (Ely style). This would provide space for stairs down from the footbridge if 6,7&8 were made into through lines. Then add a couple of west facing bays where the loco sidings are for the terminators that currently use 6&7.

The Leeman Road bridge and NRM would make for a very constricted northern throat if a through island was built west of 10&11. Any movement in to or out of 9,10,11,12 or 13 at the north end would block access to all the others.

I think that's the logic behind these being the HS2 captive platforms. I would imagine them being through platforms is purely for operational convenience.

Demolish the NRM. I wouldn't even worry about removing most of the exhibits first.

That's an interesting idea to have 2 terminating platforms instead of through platforms on the West side. It got me thinking that maybe 11 should be made into a turnback as well ? Then 10 could have level access straight out of the station.

Regarding stairwell considerations, if 7 & 8 were scrapped entirely then 6 could be pushed Westwards to give you more room instead for the stairwell. It may even be possible to put a dedicated through road alongside it, since historically it was 3 tracks through this bit of the shed.
