What's also interesting is the crossing info posted by talltim states low sighting time but looking at the map the line is very straight and no obvious oobstructions?

What state is the vegetation in?

What state is the vegetation in?

I travelled this route on Friday and Sunday - the vegetation didn't seem particularly noticeable. I did see though on one of the photos there were some bales stacked up, and there are some bushes/small trees around - but as someone said it is a pretty straight track, I can't see they would have been a big obstruction unless the car/train was hidden from view from the other vehicle?

Clearly nothing can be drawn from it at this stage, but it looks to me that the opposite gate was closed when pictures were being taken during the film on the Daily Mail article.

As a farm crossing I doubt anyone on here can confirm either way but seems strange

Sighting time is irrelevant for vehicles crossing at this LX due to the presence of a telephone. It may still be in ALCRM (the level crossing risk model, and where the above data originates) if sighting may be a potential issue for pedestrians; alternatively the phone may have been installed in the past few years and the sighting issue has not been removed from the system. Personally I don't know.

Measuring sighting distances for level crossings is, oddly, a difficult task, and there has been much debate on it in the past few years. Even on dead straight lines sighting can be hampered by bridges, vegetation, embankments, stacks of farmers produce etc, as the point where the sighting is taken from has to be at least 2 metres (often more) from the nearest line.

I noticed that, and have a feeling I know why this incident happened!!

My thoughts to the train driver involved.

There's some video footage of the scene on the Daily Mail website; http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...ruck-train-rail-crossing-North-Yorkshire.html

If anyone fancies a giggle:

A Daily Mail Reader said:
why are trains alloud to go so fast as a professional coach driver i am limited to 62 mph and all passengers must wear seat belts and i must be able to stop in the distance i see to be clear. trains should be the same and all passengers should wear seatbelts

Sigh.

Seriously sad incident, as ever. Not good for the staff, victims or families involved, not good for the passegners, not good for the train company and not good for Network Rail.

I was thinking to myself that we'd been doing well in terms of accidents this year :(

BBC Look North are reporting Network Rail stating they were in progress negotiating closure of this crossing with the landowners.

My thoughts go out to the family of the deceased and staff involved, especially the TPE driver. I can only imagine what it's like.

Some of the comments on the Daily Mail article make me despair, some include:

"Shocking, why does a fast track have crossings like this, totally stupid! I don't have any faith now in high speed trains!"

"Why didnt the triain driver slam on his brakes?"

"why are trains alloud to go so fast as a professional coach driver i am limited to 62 mph and all passengers must wear seat belts and i must be able to stop in the distance i see to be clear. trains should be the same and all passengers should wear seatbelts"

Some of the DM comments are bewildering.

I'm still trying to work out what difference seatbelts would have made in this situation, given none of the passengers were injured. I suppose this person thinks the conductor should be seatbelted at all times as well.....

And I'd hardly call the TPE line from York to Scarborough particularly quick either - it certainly isn't a high speed line like York to London/Edinburgh. And the 62mph comment - well generally there aren't vehicles along side you, etc.....

Where was this? On the video?
