Just read this and looked at some of the photos too. Thanks for posting. It's quite funny to see the amount of different locomotive classes being produced. I think it's fair to say that we didn't really need all of them.

Indeed. Some of the Sulzer classes, the 14s and maybe even some of the Peaks were unnecessary.

Great memories.

27010 did well - broken up 6 months before it was withdrawn!

"27010 was withdrawn in April 1986 and finally left Scotland on a one way trip to Vic Berry, Leicester where it was broken up in October 1985."

The N.B.L. built locomotives were ordered in a vain attempt to keep the company afloat.
Remember that just the year before B.R. was building the last steam locomotives - some of which had a life of five years.

Well spotted, thanks - caption suitably amended with the correct broken up date of October 1987.

All Our Yesterdays – 50 Years Ago – October 1966

Locomotive building was being undertaken, English Electric at the Vulcan Foundry were building class 73’s, class 86 and the delivery of the final batch of Class 20’s. The Brush Falcon Works at Loughborough and British Rail Crewe Works were delivering Class 47’s.

New locomotives:
Class 20 – D8164/65/66/67/68/69/70/71/72
Class 47 – D1103/04, D1951/52
Class 73 – E6045/46/47
Class 86 – E3160

Doncaster Works was undertaking replacement of the unreliable Mirrlees JVS12T 1250bhp engine in the Brush Type 2 fleet with a 1470bhp English Electric 12SVT engine with the following being completed this month;

D5521, D5631/49/64/67/73, D5802/13/25/34

Main line diesel and electric production increased in the month to seventeen. Steam withdrawals declined slightly from one hundred and sixty seven to one hundred and fifty three. With less than two years to go major inroads were now being made into the Stanier Black Five 4-6-0’s (twenty seven locomotives), Stanier 8F 2-8-0’s (twenty three locomotives) and BR Standards (thirty nine locomotives including another three Britannia pacifics). At least one of these steam withdrawals survived being condemned by British Rail and can still be seen today.

47521. My favourite one! I went behind it many times, in blue as pictured and then in NSE. :)
Again interesting to note how many of the classes mentioned are still performing a job on the mainline fifty years later

I also took photographs of the 71s at Hither Green, 40 years, wow, seems like last week!

thanks

71's are possibly one of the most ugly engines ever to be built, on par with Metrovick Co.Bo's and man they're ugly.

Why did they use the 12SVT for the 31? It was already downrated for the class 37: it was happily running at 2000bhp in Africa. Using it at 1470bhp seems inefficient, and just extra dead weight. Did EE not have a suitable 8-cylinder engine block?
Which brings another question, why were the 37s not given the full 2000bhp?

That's some photo collection you've got John. I've enjoyed looking through them. I'm surprised that the first Black 5 wasn't withdrawn until then. There must have been so many locomotives in service around then of all types

And out of all of those diesels the only ones that are still going are the ones that were built by English-Electric.

All Our Yesterdays – 50 Years Ago – November 1966

Locomotive building was being undertaken as follows, English Electric at the Vulcan Foundry were delivering the final batch of Class 20’s. The Brush Falcon Works at Loughborough and British Rail Crewe Works were delivering Class 47’s and British Rail, Derby Works were delivering Class 25’s

New locomotives:
Class 20 – D8174/75/76/77
Class 25 – D7661/62/63/64
Class 47 – D1105/06, D1953/54/55

Doncaster Works was undertaking replacement of the unreliable Mirrlees JVS12T 1250bhp engine in the Brush Type 2 fleet with a 1470bhp English Electric 12SVT engine with the following being completed this month;

D5593, D5610/62, D5813

Main line diesel and electric production decreased in the month to thirteen. Steam withdrawals in the month basically remained steady with a slight increase from one hundred and fifty three to one hundred and fifty five. With less than two years to go major inroads were now being made into the Stanier Black Five 4-6-0’s (thirty four locomotives), Stanier 8F 2-8-0’s (twenty locomotives) and BR Standards (thirty one locomotives including another two Britannia Pacifics). A start was also made on the “non standard” diesel shunter fleet with one of the LMS jackshaft drive D3/7 locomotives (12022) and four Crossley engine “Class 08” derivative D3/3 locomotives (D3122/23/24/26) withdrawn. At least two of the steam withdrawals (75079 and 78019) survived being condemned by British Rail and can still be seen today.

Class 31 - would the electric motors, etc., have been compatible with higher power ?

Class 37 - I seem to recall that one Class 37 was temporarily uprated to 2000 hp, but presumably this was not successful.

It's interesting to note that a year or two later English Electric were building the 1400 class for Portuguese railways with the 8 cylinder 1330 hp 8CSVT engine.
Perhaps it was a compromise due to what was available and reliable? They wouldn't have wanted to re engine them and then find a load of new problems to sort out.
Like Beven I wonder too if putting too much power through the traction motors on a 31, which only had four driven axles may have been a problem? I don't know if wheelslip would have been controlled easily either. I've seen them slip badly even set at 1470 hp.
Another thing to say is that both 31s and 37s didn't seem to suffer often with major engine failures from what I remember. 50s occasionally did though and they squeezed quite a lot of horsepower out of that power unit.
Mind you they were flogged at times...

I was thinking more on the lines of they could have used a smaller unit in the 31 to save on weight, such as a -C series version of the class 20 engine........maybe they just wanted to use something "off the shelf". The interesting thing is that in the early 1960's some of the class 30 fleet had their Mirrlees uprated. D5545 and D5655-5670 were taken into type 3 territory with a 1600bhp rating, while D5677 was set to 2000bhp for a while which suggests that maybe there was a bit of spare capacity in the traction motors

To add to the mix remember that the original Mirrlees engine was uprated from 1365bhp to 1600bhp following the trial with D5545 on sixteen Brush Type 2 locomotives (D5655 – D5670) when they entered traffic in late 1960 and uprated to 2000bhp on D5835 when that entered traffic in April 1962. They were only de-rated back to 1365bhp at the end of 1962 when problems started to appear in the Mirrlees engines of the early 1365bhp locomotives with more than 500,000 miles developing engine fatigue problems mainly centred on the engine crankcase and bearing housings. D5835 ran around 30,000 miles as a "Type 4" without problem.

71's are possibly one of the most ugly engines ever to be built, on par with Metrovick Co.Bo's and man they're ugly.

They might have been ugly in your eyes but railway locomotives are built for work not beauty and few locomotives have been built that could deliver 2,500hp with such reliability. The only thing that cut their lives short was that the work for them dried up with the cessation of heavy hauled sets such as the Golden Arrow and Night Ferry. When withdrawn and cut up they had years of live left in them but no work to do.

Its interesting that the first mass dieselisation projects involved shunters and DMUs, both using small engines.
Why was that? Were big diesels not reliable enough at that stage? Or was it a way of trying to bypass trade union issues by converting the less-critical services first?
