I have a acer swift 3 laptop and the charger got damaged so i bought a LOGIK - LTC65W18 Universal USB Type-C Laptop Charger from currys. It charges the laptop but heats up around the charging port area of the laptop

Does anyone know why this is happening ?
Is it causing long term damage to the laptop ?

Thanks

Difficult to say, but a hot connector often indicates high resistance. Double-check that the connector is fully seated, maybe try charging something else (e.g. a phone) and see if the connector gets warm there too.

My old work laptop used to do this. IT told me either the laptop or charger were faulty, and replaced both. I suspect this wasn't strictly necessary but I was happy with the solution as I didn't particularly want to cause a fire.

Personally I would always buy the one supplied with the laptop, yes USB-C chargers are somewhat universal but cheapening out just isn't worth it.
Look for the model number on the original charger as it'll be a generic part branded for the laptop manufacturer buy a reputable manufacturer (usually, LiteOn, Delta, Mean Well or FSP) and so it can be cheaper buying a differently branded one, buying the one that was originally supplied also guarntees that the wattage is enough.
The one for my MSI is also used by Asus amongst others, it's just a generic Delta electronics USB-C PSU with MSI branding.

I with you, buy something that is 100% compatible rather than risking busting your laptop.

Bigclive got one for a teardown that had fried both a MS Surface and connected display, the aftermarket charger became a lot more expensive after that!

Great channel. I love his tear downs of innocent looking but lethal gadgets, usually from China.

You certainly got ripped off by Currys for their own brand junk but nothing new there

A bit late now but something like an Anker branded USB-C plug and cable would be of much higher quality and always on offer at places like Amazon, still probably £30 - £40 for the package but will happily last years and years

The charger from Currys is around £50 so it wasnt exactly cheap
Don't Curry's shops have an in-store tech help desk? If so it might be worth taking the charger back there, with your laptop, and getting them to assess it. If there is a fault in the charger you'd be due a refund, or if it's a compatibility issue you might be able to get a credit against an alternative charger.
