Leeds to Northampton, via Wellingborough?

So either trains to northampton, or to welingborough and the bus or taxi back. I've found it to be an hour faster by train coming down to wellingborough, and the drive during peak periods is the same for either station.

I've found some journeys that involve 3 changes, and only a 6 minute wait (at Sheffield / Chesterfield / Leicester) or 1 change but a long (45 minutes) wait. Thankfully the outward journey has a negligible time difference but for the return it's an hour difference.

Is it worth trying with a short change time? It is off peak so taking the next train is an option so in case the train is late, should i just use national rail to find the permitted train(s) that get me to my destination quickest?

Thank you

The minimum change time is 7min at Sheffield and 6min at Derby but otherwise 5min on your route.
Leicester and Chesterfield are straightforward and if things go pear shaped you will be entitled to delay repay. Derby and Sheffield are likely to involve changing platforms.

You need to change at both Sheffield and Chesterfield? Surely not? You could always go on Northern to Nottingham, then change for Kettering, then again for Wellingboro. Just two changes.

Perhaps EMR could rebrand Wellingboro' as "Northampton Parkway and Wellingborough".

It must be a reasonable claim for anyone with a destination in the eastern suburbs of Northampton, and it might make at least one TOC improve the services out of Northampton to the north. :)

Or perhaps we could just call it Wellingborough as that is the town that it serves, albeit on the eastern side. The services at Wellingborough are no better for northbound travel than they are from Northampton.

That's true. Southbound to northampton is faster (but the fastest have a good 30+ min change) but northbound to Leeds at least is the same. Ended up choosing to go via Birmingham New Street which is a good hub tbf.

Oh no, i put those stations as they regularly came up as changes but it varies for each journey. EMR does go straight from Nottingham (or Sheffield) to Wellingborough which is handy! Return has at least 2 changes though - not as comfortable as going via birmingham.

If Wellingborough rail station had a fast bus link to northampton i might use it more.

Most of the time Nottingham to Wellingborough requires a change at Kettering, while Sheffield requires an additional change at Leicester.
