Hi,

Just a question regarding London's Paper Day Travelcards. First of all, are these still available to purchase either online or through ticket offices?

Secondly, if I was to travel into London at peak time (say 7am) and travel back after peak (say 9pm), would I be able to use my 16-25 railcard on an 'Anytime' Day Travelcard?

I am looking to start my journey outside London, so could it be easier to purchase a ticket from my departure station (Huntingdon) to the boundary of zone 6 (Hadley Wood/Crews Hill) and then use the Travelcard from there?

Many thanks!

So you want a Huntingdon to London Zones 1-6 Anytime Day Travelcard. You can use your railcard discount and the cost including discount is £47.50. This gives you one return trip from Humtingdon to London olus unlimited travel in Zones 1-6 once in London.

Where eaxtly are you travelling to as an Anytime Day Return to London Terminals is £37.80 so the travelcard 'add-on' is quite large on this route. If you're doind extensive travel once in London then a travelcard is worth it, but if you're only going to be doing a couple of Zone 1 journeys then a return to London Termonals and contactless for the tube would be cheaper.

Could a modest saving be made by splitting at some intermediate station like Stevenage, provided, of course that the train to/from Huntingdon actually stops there? Likely won't be necessary to change trains from there onward into Central London.

Huntington to Stevenage = £12.00 Anytime Day Return with 16-25 railcard discount + Stevenage to London Zones 1-6 Anytime Day Travelcard = £27.10 with discount. Total = £39.10.

Oyster would be cheaper still, as the OP has a Railcard.

Huntington to Stevenage = £12.00 Anytime Day Return with 16-25 railcard discount + Stevenage to London Zones 1-6 Anytime Day Travelcard = £27.10 with discount. Total = £39.10.
Or £11.45 in July and August for the Huntingdon to Stevenage ticket.

This could work but there are some peak time trains that don’t call at Stevenage.

Oyster would be cheaper still, as the OP has a Railcard.
It would, if the travel on the underground was before 09:30.

The OP would also need to pay £7 for an Oyster card (assuming they don’t already have one), and get the discount loaded. They’d then have to load some credit on the card.

Many thanks everyone for your assistance with this fare query.

It does appear that a standard Huntingdon to London Day Travelcard even with my Railcard is far more expensive than if you split the ticket. The best idea I have seen is definitely the split at Stevenage, as most (not all) peak services call at Stevenage so it would work out better that way.

Out of interest, what would the Off Peak 16-25 Day Travelcard cost be if I was to delay travelling for a few hours? And crucially, where does one purchase these paper travelcards now?

Many thanks!

An Off Peak Day Travelcard is £30.65 with your railcard discount. Valid to depart Huntingdon after 08:59 return on any train.

You can buy a one day Travelcard at Huntingdon ticket office, from the ticket vending machine, or online from any ticket selling site (our own site sells then) but you have to collect them from a ticket machine before travel. They aren’t available as an e-ticket.

Off Peak Day Return from Huntingdon to Stevenage with railcard discount is £12.00 if travelling at or after 9.00 a.m. but before 10 a.m. Then the Off Peak Day Travelcard from Stevenage to London Zones 1-6 is £21.55. First Southbound train you could use from Huntingdon would be the 0911, which does call at Stevenage. Total = £33.55, so no saving on the £30.65 Off Peak Day Travelcard fare that @Hadders has mentioned.

Can railcard holders (including Network Railcards at weekends) still get a discount on a Zones 1-6 Day Travelcard for use wholly within the Travelcard area as long as they buy it at a national rail (as opposed to London Underground) ticket office or ticket vending machine? And what about a Zones 1-9 Day Travelcard?

The undiscounted price is currently £15.90 for Zones 1-6 and £17 for Zones 1-9 so I would guess that the railcard discounted price (if still available) would be about £10.60 and £11.30 respectively.

Yes. They can also obtain it from a LUL POM by selecting any provided railcard option; the ticket prints as "Reduced Travelcard" without identifying a specific Railcard used.
