Hi there

Next week I am out on a day trip to Cambridge.

I'm planning on going via King's Cross as that seems to be much quicker than taking a train from Liverpool Street.

National Rail Enquiries gives me a price of £26.40 for an Off-Peak Day Return, but the site also tells me that I can start and end my journey, providing it is on National Rail, at Old Street, Moorgate, Liverpool Street or King's Cross.

Is it right that I can then return from Cambridge on an AGA service that arrives at Liverpool Street? I'm meeting a friend in that area after my trip so it might be more convenient, even if it takes a little longer getting back.

Thanks in advance. :)

Yes, the £24.60 offpeak day return is valid to/from London Kings Cross via Hitchin or London Liverpool Street via Bishops Stortford.

There is a cheaper £21.70 OPDR that is valid only on AGA to/from London Liverpool Street.

Perhaps worth pointing out that Greater Anglia is currently running a weekday fares promotion - with this an off-peak London Liv St to Cambridge day return is £10. You need to buy via their website or app.

There's nothing to stop the OP taking the train from Cambridge to Kings Cross then taking the Underground to Moorgate, which is a short walk from Liverpool Street.

This is probably quicker than the Cambridge-Liverpool Street train and is valid as the Underground between Kings Cross St Pancras and Moorgate is an inter-available route.

When travelling from Cambridge to London terminals, can someone clarify what London terminals means. I used to think it meant just kings cross and Liverpool Street. (And Finsbury Park, and Tottenham Hale).

Travelling onward or further beyond kgx, where are you allowed to travel onwards to. And is it valid on underground.

If you travelled to Moorgate, how would you get there with a Cambridge to London terminals ticket?!

Depends what time of the hour. If you miss the xx47 Kings Cross fast you have a choice of (in the standard off peak hour):
xx04 Liverpool Street semi-fast, arriving xx15ish the following hour, or
xx15 King's Cross fast, arriving xx03 the following hour, reaching xx15-xx20 at Moorgate at best via LU (so probably best on the xx04 if you're there in time))

Another good alternative after the xx15 is the xx30 semi-fast, changing at Finsbury Park (to arrive Moorgate about xx45-50 the next hour.

Basically, nowhere, and no.

And the normal route to Moorgate is via Finsbury Park.

However, there is an exception which allows travel to Moorgate by LU from Kings Cross.

Assuming the ticket is valid, the best trains from Liverpool St are the 08.33 Liverpool St to Cambridge and 16.40 Cambridge to Liverpool St.

Both are 12 car 379s, and only call at Tottenham Hale and Audley End. Not as quick as the GN route, but 379s are half decent units. You may even get a coach to yourself.

Edit - Just tried the GA website out of curiosity. Picking Wed 8 Feb at random I got £9 outbound and £6 on the return for an advance purchase on those two trains.

You can change at Finsbury Park for a train to Moorgate.

Alternatively, a National Rail ticket with a destination/origin of London Terminals is valid into/out of King's Cross, then it is also valid for travel for a direct journey between King's Cross St. Pancras and either Old Street or Moorgate only. Break of journey is not permitted.

FPK and TOM are not London Terminals but the ticket is absolutely valid at those locations.

London Terminals in this case includes King's Cros, Old Street, Moorgate and Liverpool Street.

As described in our Fares Guide, you can continue on LU to Old Street or Moorgate by LU, but you may not break your journey at somewhere like Angel.

You can change at Finsbury Park, Highbury & Islington or King's Cross.

(Or walk from Liverpool Street!)

Thanks to all for the advice.

I went for the LST – CBG deal online – £10 return.

I'm staying in SE London so I'll cover the short hop to LST on Oyster.

Thanks to 306024 for advice on services. I'll definitely catch the 16:40 (providing my ticket is valid), as that's perfect timing for me to arrive back at LST.

Can someone confirm whether if on arrival at Kings Cross and travelling on to Moorgate on a London Terminals ticket this would get returned by the barrier or if you need to present it at the barrier to avoid it being swallowed?

Some tickets are now retained by the Kings X barriers. If seeking to travel to Moorgate, I would ask to be let through the staffed gate.

I've never had a ticket retained by the barriers at Kings Cross although I note, with interest, the comment above from John @ home

I had not had a ticket retained by a ticket gate at Kings X until Monday 30 January. I've also noticed that a significant proportion of my tickets to London this year have been to named terminal stations (Euston or Kings X) instead of 'London Terminals'.

I don't yet know whether it's tickets to London Kings X only which are being retained by the gates.
