Over on the WCML the 3tph to Manchester all have a similar number of stops and a similar journey time.
Given the difficulties/compromises over the (now deferred) May 2022 timetable that had 2tph to Leeds, a similar journey time would be easier to timetable.
I'm not convinced that there is currently the capacity elsewhere on the southern section of the ECML for all the extra services that people want to see.
But the 3tph on the WCML isn't great as the services have to blend in with hourly/half-hourly services when they come off the mainline e.g. between Stoke and Manchester.

If Leeds ever got 3 tph then I'd advocate a pattern of a train every 30 mins with the 3rd one fitted in "off pattern" to fill a specific need e.g. faster end to end journey time or more stops for connectivity

It's a shame the Eastern Leg was scrapped, as that would give OP the fast service they want.
