I was checking the latest version of the routeing guide (dated 18/1/2011).

London Group-Shrewsbury no longer appears to have a mapped route via Crewe & WCML. Can anyone with the older versions confirm if this has been removed recently?

The 3 mapped combinations in the current version all involve travel via wolverhampton:

CA+GC
Paddington/Marylebone-West Ruislip-Banbury-Birmingham-wolverhampton-Shrewsbury

CS
Marylebone (via High Wycombe)/Paddington (via Reading)-Banbury-wolverhampton-shrewsbury

LM
Euston -Rugby/Nuneaton/Stafford - Wolverhampton -shrewsbury

The NR & VT journey planners still provide journeys (& VT will allow you to purchase ticket/reserve seats) via Crewe as the default/quickest option (although via Birmingham is cheaper with a route Birmingham ticket), so I am wondering if this is an error in the RG ?

In practice, if you managed to reserve seats through an online journey planner no guard would take a second look. Also, considering how keen the TOCs and ATOC are to direct users of the NRG to those journey planners, they wouldn't really have a leg to stand on trying to argue that it wasn't valid. Most areas of consumer law give the benefit of the doubt to the consumer, and it's my understanding that in practice if either the NRG or the journey planners permit a journey then it should be permitted. Having said that, maybe the journey planners will be changing soon/have been changed by now!

Thanks, collybs.

so Euston via Crewe has been removed, & so have routes from Paddington/Waterloo via Newport &/or Westbury & via Hereford.
(though there is still a route warminster/salisbury priced by SWT available)

Interesting that the NFM08 still shows these fares for London Terminals-Shrewsbury:

"Route Birmingham" SVR £48.50
"Any permitted" SVR £60.60
(both priced by VWC)

As all of the mapped routes in the latest RG now travel through Wolverhampton, I can't see what the "any permitted" fare that is not allowed with the cheaper "route Birmingham" fare as I can't see how in practice you go to Wolverhampton without going through Birmingham first.
This suggests removing a permitted route via Crewe is an error in the RG.

You can go via Stafford on map LM

I see that the Routeing guide has been updated again today - all pages on that site are dated 5/4/11.

London to Shrewsbury has a mapped route via Crewe again: using maps LC + BD

The 3 other mapped routes are as shown in the previous version:
CS
GC + CA
LM
