Wasn't it the Polmont crash which brought an end to the use of "pull-push" operation?
No....push-pull operation continues to this day (e.g. Marylebone-Birmingham-Stourbridge, Cardiff-Holyhead/Manchester, and King's Cross-Leeds/York with class 91 locomotives; as well as - until recently - TPE class 68s and Mark 5a stock).

They had a weight added under the vehicle and additional deflectors etc. They were modified for full TDM control at Devonport before transferring to Intercity Anglia in the early 1990s.

I would suggest searching for Polmont rail crash if you think hitting a cow is trivial
That was because the train was headed by the driving trailer which, due to the lack of an engine, made it much lighter and less able to withstand the impact than a locomotive or multiple unit.

No, and, in fact, DBSOs such as that involved at Polmont continued in passenger operation on the Great Eastern until 2006, and some survive to this day on Network Rail duties.
Didn't the GE ones last until the FLIRTs arrived in ~2021?

Hence why they had weights added.

No they didn’t last until 2020. Are you confusing DBSOs with DVTs?

I thought you were referring to the Class 37 Mark 2 sets that ran from Norwich to Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft.

They were top & tailed at GA. The Northern ones used the DBSO.

That was ironic as us Norwich drivers used to sign them.

Bizarre, although not entirely surprising pedantry on this thread.
