Hi,

I was recently made redundant after working for over 21 years in a Tour Company that specialised in arranging travel to Asia. I have been in the travel industry for over 30 years. I had been considering a career change anyway and wonder if any of the rail companies have any jobs perhaps in the admin/planning side. For family reasons I can only work Mon-Thur or Mon-Fri 0900-1700 hours, no shifts, weekends, bank holidays. I travel alot by train in the UK and Europe and have good knowledge of rail geography, I have done a bit of ticketing too, although along time ago, wrtiting UK and Overseas documents by hand. I have written to SWT, EWS-DBS, National Rail, Eurostar and DB, but no luck with them so far. I also travel when I can on the various special mainline railcharter services, mainly by steam which I love, but also sometimes by Diesel if it's a route or destination that has an interest for me. I live in South West London, I am loyal, good time keeper, only downside is I do have the worst writing in the world. Grateful for any suggestions? Tks N Rgds Steve.

I think if you are restricted on hours, that reduces your opportunities a lot, so chances are you should be looking for a clerical/managerial, non-customer facing job. Every frontline job I've ever done on the railway has involved shifts well outside of the 9-5. Only time I did that was when I was on 6 month management secondments, and to be honest, I hated those hours.

I'm afraid you've probably priced yourself out of most railway jobs with those hours.

I'd echo what the previous two posters have said, for most jobs in the Rail industry you'll need to be more flexible, Yes there may be certain office-based positions which are Mon-Fri but you would be limiting yourself to these roles, and there are hardly any vacancies for office-based roles. Keep an eye on the website of your local TOC's for vacancies!

Are you able to state what "family reasons" prevent you from working other hours? As I suspect that many people working shift work in the rail industry have kids too, so if they can do this then why couldn't you? No offence intended, sometimes you just need to make yourself more flexible to get the job you like! :)

Thanks to all above for your input which I will take on board, the family reasons are due to ilnness/fraility of aged parents, I am the sole carer. maybe I will need to be a little more flexible/have a rethink. Kind Rgds Steve.
