We live in the states and the last time we rode a train in England was 1991. We are planning to take the GWR Line from London, Paddington to St. Ives, Cornwall in June, 2021. Prior to this, we will be spending 2 weeks in London. Unfortunately, we will have considerable luggage; 2 standard roller carry-ons 10" x 15" x 24" and 2 oversize rollers 12" x 20" x 28".
Questions:
1) Are we permitted this much luggage on the train?
2) Do different class tickets allow for different amounts of luggage?
3) An option might be leaving the two large bags at Paddington, but the luggage storage fees there sound super expensive.

Thanks for any help or ideas you can lend!

If you get to Paddington early for the train then you can put the big bags into the luggage rack at the end of the carriage (car) before it fills up. The small bags will probably fit on the rack above the seats. Theft is very unlikely (almost unheard of), but best to sit facing the rack at the end so you can keep an eye on it.

You change at St Erth and there are steps over the tracks there, so you may need to shuttle the bags across.

Hi Chris;

Many thanks for the information, especially the photos. Think my wife is convinced to scale-down to one suitcase :D

Best Regards,

Your luggage is within limits (either class) so long as you can lift in on board yourselves

If you have Eurail passes, or don't mind paying slightly more, you can avoid the footbridge at St Erth by going through to Penzance and coming back on the next convenient train (in normal times they are 2 per hour, so you'd only lose an hour at most.

Thanks to the both of you above...luggage sounds managable. Really looking forward to seeing beautiful Cornwall again.
