The main line through the Ruhrgebiet between Essen and Duisburg may be heavily disrupted for months. Yesterday, a lorry carrying 35.000 liters of fuel crashed into a car right under a railway bridge, resulting in a huge fire (disrupting at the same time the Ruhrgebiet's main motorway A40). Luckily both drivers of the lorry and car did not sustain life-threating injuries but are in hospital. In addition, the rail line had been closed for construction works anyway, so no trains were directly affected.

However, it seems as if one of the rail bridges (see the map link below, the one carrying the 2nd and 3rd track from the north) will have to be torn down and rebuilt, which might take months. And again, this is the main railway line in the area, with 11 local and regional trains and ~ 6 intercity/ICE trains an hour per direction. The rail line was supposed to reopen on Monday, it is still unclear what will happen.

Radio Duisburg confirmed that at least one, If not all bridges are to be demolished.
The motorway will be closed for aprox 14 days. Some suggest rail services will be affected until the end of the year, although that is not confirmed yet.
A commuters nightmare.

The display at Duisburg Hbf says the line is blocked until 4th October. Very optimistic.
Ad the motorway is closed, rail replacement services are decending into chaos. Took me 2 hours this afternoon for what is normally aprox 20 minutes.
