Maybe the PIS could be disabled and a card with destination placed on the driver's window until they resolve the PIS.

For a while the 50x did that for a bit as the destination blinds seemed to have gone on the blink.
There’s the PRM regulations that prevent that.

It would certainly make sense to do that and would keep them out in service

Drivers sometimes manually disable the PIS to make their own announcements, especially on TfW and TPE services but often just the PA voice. I remeber the LNER Azuma ones has teething problems in the beginning announcing 'we will shortly be arriving at Aberdeen etc' after leaving KX.
