Merseyrail Expansion

At the moment all stations trains on this route seems to be two per hour, Northern to Manchester Oxford Road and to Warrington. So two extra paths per hour would need to be found, and platformed at Lime Street main shed.

When Lime Street got the last major rebuild, the approach tracks (and the need to cross over them) were said to be the big constraint on capacity. I believe Platform 1 is essentially served by a long siding as a result, trains arrive and depart on the same (5th) track to avoid crossing anything else, but this is on the North side so doesn't help.

The loss of the Edge Hill flyover produces a lot of conflicts where the lines split in the flat junction, and so some sort of grade separation is probably going to be needed - as it would be for Wapping tunnel. Maybe a junction scheme first with provision to use it for the tunnel as a second phase?

Just to keep you up to date,,,
Plans have been submitted for a brand new train station in Liverpool near the city’s popular Baltic Market food hall
Liverpool-based Owen Ellis Architects and Mott Macdonald Engineers have designed the Liverpool Baltic Station for the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, to increase footfall and economic growth and act as a catalyst for development in the Baltic area.
Other developments in the pipeline like Pumpfields and the opening of the new stadium at Bramley Moore opening 17th Feb.

This is really old news isn't it? I hope! I thought construction was imminent.

Possibly the formal application rather than "Here are some some ideas and nice pictures." previously seen.

There's not much land involved. Merseyrail/travel have already secured the site (and fenced it off): it is a small triangle (Baltic Triangle triangle!) alongside the side of the cutting. Most of the station will be sub-surface and the surface building will be, I imagine, mostly on a bridge over the tracks.

Constructing it won't be cheap. It's not so much a rebuild as a new work of civil engineering. But nevertheless £100 million seems eyewateringly expensive to us mortals.
Todays £2.15bn Government announcement of transport projects in the north includes
  • A new Merseyrail station in the Baltic Triangle – better connecting the city to ‘Britain’s coolest neighbourhood’ – starting works this Autumn and complete by Spring 2028.

Thankfully, this thread has awoken from its dormancy. Is the Baltic Triangle an area with much refrigeration with it being described as "Britain's coolest neighbourhood", which reminded me of the line in the folk song...."and under old overcoats we always slept"

The final item above seems a tad politically made as the North is really being held to ransom by the combined efforts of both Trump and Putin rather than by a "broken transport system".

I'm not sure wilful ignorance of demotic English of the last sixty years will really work here

It's almost as if we're governed by elected politicians with political agendas.

I respect your opinion, though I'm not sure how extending to Warrington is a sensible extension, but adding west Wirral (part of the Liverpool City Region) to the Merseyrail network isn't sensible. The city region itself should be the priority, surely?

It is by far the most awkward extension of those I've suggested, I agree. I'm just not currently convinced with the suggestion of running Merseyrail all the way to Warrington, at least Widnes is actually in the Liverpool City Region. That said, I'd be very surprised if any extensions take place along the CLC route, to be honest.
What’re your thoughts on reopening the low level platforms at Bank Quay and running services from there along the current goods line to Liverpool and stop at Widnes on the way.

If that is the route via Sankey Bridges, is it now part of an aspirational prospective new rail route between Liverpool and the Manchester Airport region?

Where are the trains going after Ditton? There is no connection to the Merseyrail network and do 777s have the battery capacity to do that distance?

Who were the likely objectors to the Liverpool Baltic station project
I don't see anything in the linked piece that suggests anyone was objecting. But that doesn't stop there being a need for planning permission - and for something as big as a railway station, I would expect to be given (or refused) by the committee of elected councillors rather than delegating the decision to officers.

AGM of the North Cheshire Rail User Group yesterday. Report on Facebook that a senior bod (Steve Dodd) in Merseyrail has stated expansion to Helsby in the next 3 to 6 years and then onward to Daresbury as the new 777's prove their reliability.
