Hi everyone :)

I've seen, principally in the January 2011 issue of the Modern Railways magazine (reliability special file), that we use Miles Per 5 Minute Delay (MP5MD) to determine a train's reliability.
But what is MP5MD ?

Is it the average mileage that a train travels between two 5MD ?

Thanks :)

J.

Yes - but the abbreviation stands for Miles per Five Minute Delay - which you seem to have worked out anyway, but Roger Ford explains it in the box on page 36 of the Jan MR. 'Miles' is the total fleet miles run in the period.

"'Miles' is the total fleet miles run in the period." What's the period for you ? (sorry for the Minutes instead of Miles, brain a bit tired :D )

Hmmmmmm.

Example

Train fleet does 4000 miles in a period (a period is usually four weeks). There are 10 delays of five minutes or more caused by train faults in that period.

4000/10 equals 400.

So this fleet has 400 MP5MD.

Bombardier are introducing a new train fleet
