Has a number range been allocated to the new MK.5 coaches ? Just wondering if they will be 6 numbers as with the new EMU stock,or 5 as with the existing coaching stock.

I would think they would be numbered in the 10xxx to 35xxx range (with gaps) if they were to follow the coaching stock series.

Running out of 5 digit numbers. TOPS use most of the number range for type 2 and 3 locos although most of the classes no longer exist and the odd number here and there are in preservation

It was more that it's the way it was done before TOPS; in the 1980s there had to be a mass renumbering of about half the DMU cars to avoid conflict with locomotive numbers when the DMU cars were added to TOPS.

I think there is a rule that a number cannot be re-used until seven years after the original item of stock with that number has been scrapped - in practice that would mean since the last of an entire class rather than a single item, so the chances of any re-use of a series will be very low indeed thanks to preservation leaving the possibility of something one day returning to the main line.
