Yesterday morning (21st Nov) I was at Darlington waiting for my service to Birmingham New Street. I noticed that a charter was due to call there beforehand and it duly arrived, with top and tailed DRS 47's. I believe it was called the "Morpeth Round Table" or something to that effect but I cannot find any information anywhere.

I am planning on making a scenario on my Newcastle to York "Modern" route so any information that anyone can give would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers for that, very interesting. Probably explains why all the carriages were decked out with tinsel and streamers!

its a great shame you havent had the pleasure of witnessing the return journey - your scenario would require much less female clothing much more booze and terrified staff - it is an annual event probably because it takes some of the "ladies" close on a year to recover

A lady who works for me was on this tour. She went last year as well and says it's a total ****-up, and the few blokes who staff the train (one per coach) have to dress in something truly terrifying sounding called a 'mankini'. I asked her to get a photo of whatever was hauling the train, and she said she'd try to remember.

Hey! Who replaced the word '****' with asterisks?

The charter is a charity event that Morpeth Round Table organise and run every year. The passengers are all women (470 this year) and the only men on board are a handful of Round Table members and friends who help serve drinks, run the bingo, quiz games and be entertaining.

The train calls at Morpeth, Cramlington, Newcastle, Durham, Darlington and London Kings Cross.

Upon arrival in London the ladies go and do as they please. This usually involves shopping, going to see a show or just having a good drinking session.

On the return journey there is a fancy dress party, this years theme was Emergency Services. There is a lot of alcohol consumed on board and a giant hen party is probably the best way to describe the journey.

The train is chartered solely for this purpose. On board the women put up christmas decorations to brighten up the carraiges along with decorations for their fancy dress theme.

It has operated over the last 15 years raising thousands of pounds for charity and hopefully will continue to operate for another 15 years.

This year our Charter was operated by Rail-Blue Charters (www.rail-bluecharters.co.uk) and hauled by DRS and the service was fantastic from both companys.

Somewhat typical of women not to get it quite right. Duff bashing indeed!

That's why they had to drink so much, so they could forget the motive power up front! I think some of those pictures of the on board activities on the Facebook page could do with an '18' stamp on them!

Good lord! Is that the sort of thing that Round Tables are into these days?
