Hi

I was filling out an application

It asks you to choose four of the most critical aspects of a bus drivers job from a list:

Driving
Arrange routes and diversions
Customer Service
Vehicle maintenance
Administer First Aid
Cash handling
Safety
Planning routes

I put Customer service, planning routes, safety, Cash handling

Which four would you choose (order dosen't matter)

Am I right bus drivers have a basic comprehension/numeracy test prior to training. Any mechanics test?

Thanks

Be able to put your foot to the floor when pulling away, and push your foot through the floor when braking.

If you can't do that, nothing else on that list matters. :)

Oh, and good luck with your application by the way!

The local buses run on the Flintstones mode your way then to save on fuel?

Be able to handle a bus like a F1 car is also a requirement it seems.....

I have an invitation for a Southern Rail assessment for gateline staff which is great news... just keeping my options open. I thought driving just sounded too obvious and wasn't sure what it meant in itself!

Train Driving is the ideal.

I wouldn't drive a bus just to get into train driving as chances are that would be a waste of time but it is another role I am attracted to and it may help me gain an improved set of transferable skills

For me, it would be driving, customer service, cash handling and safety. The bus drivers I know don't do much route planning!

To the OP, you were applying for a bus drivers job, yet you do not think that driving is a critical aspect of it?

But you do plan routes if you're a coach driver. Most people dont differentiate between buses and coaches lol

I know it sounds stupid!

I just thought to myself that's obvious so perhaps they are thinking outside of the box. Driving as a term itself does not represent a competency in my eyes... it seemed rather vague.

See what you mean though

Driving - highly important to have a good standard of driving, they wouldnt want you crashing there buses
Arrange routes and diversions- a decent company would have routes set out, and a back up plan in case of road closures for diversions, so wouldnt be applicable for the average driver
Customer Service - very important, you want happy customers
Vehicle maintenance - dont they have bus mechanics for this?
Administer First Aid - part of health and safety requirements, very important
Cash handling - giving out right change is important, so as not to lose the company money
Safety - most important
Planning routes - most firms will provide you with a detailed route guide. bus drivers do not do this, even on private hire services the management will provide you with a route.
