How about the ex-Marine Station in Dover?
(Can't find a suitable picture at the moment)

Lowgill Viaduct in the Lake District gets my vote:

Adam :D

I think, that this was the Viaduct that was shown on the opening credits of the 1988 BBC TV programe, The Train Now Departing ?

My vote goes to Monsal Head viaduct.

Very popular location :D

It's not exactly massive but the viaduct at the south east of the triangle in Gwaun cae Gurwen (South Wales) is sort of impressive in that it is still there and has never been used!

Some very impressive structures and some great pics - thanks guys.

Does the fact that most of the structures nominated are viaducts suggest that they are the most impressive or that most of the other kind of structures are no longer with us (or in use)?

Well yes, you see areas such as closed stations in major towns and cities Will quickly get redeveloped because of the value of the land (well in theory!) whereas structures such as viaducts and tunnels will often be in the middle of nowhere and the cost of demolition may be prohibitive, so more often than not they will be left alone.

Of course that is not always the case. The vast expanse of car park that was Blackpool central station, Sheffield victoria and Gosport stations stood for many years after closure before being redeveloped. indeed Wolverhampton great western and Manchester mayfield are still standing as no real plan to use the structure or land have been forthcoming

Have a look around this site

Or here

http://www.28dayslater.co.uk/forums/underground-sites/

Where people have taken pictures of viaducts, tunnels, stations etc that have been abandoned

Thought Mayfield was in the process of being demolished and most of Wolves Low Level has been redeveloped now.

thought of Meldon (already mentioned) how about Holsworthy (9 50' spans) and Chelfham on the Lynton & Barnstaple, which hopefully will see trains again.

Is either Birkenhead Woodside Ferry or Liverpool Exchange still extant?

Smardale Gill Viaduct, on the trackbed of the old South Durham and Lancs Union Railway. You can just see it from Smardale Viaduct on the S&C, and now has a footpath over it. The road that you drive on from Tebay Truck Stop to Kirkby Stephen is on the old trackbed of this railway.

Does the recently built viaduct across Borough Market count? I do find it quite impressive and it is for the time being disused.

checked out liverpool Exchange. While the platforms and canopies have gone, the frount is still intact as are the approach viaducts, the site is basically a car park, and with HS2, there have been calls to rebuild the station as it is in central Liverpool

Not sure if anyone has mentioned Ingleton Viaduct or Larpool Viaduct (Esk Valley Viaduct).

The disused Midland(?) line between Dewsbury and Crigglestone was always something of a white elephant, but does have two rather impressive brick viaducts at Horbury Bridge and Calder Grove/Crigglestone.

Got to agree with that... I love the dark purpley / black colour of them.

Only the facade remains....

... an office development was built on the station so it would effectively have to be a whole new station on the site.

I love getting a glimpse of Crigglestone from Wakefield Barnsley trains.

Blue engineering brick apparently - which might explain why they are still there !
