If there is a good price to be had, then I would like to make a journey from Motherwell (MTH) on either Tue, Wed or Thu (21, 22 or 23 June) this week. It will be a day trip, leaving MTH between 0600 and 0900 and travelling to either Peterborough (PBO) or Milton Keynes Central (MKC). Return journey should get me back the same day, preferably around 2200 - this is in no way fixed if there is a good fare available, but I need around 3 hours minimum at destination.

I don't have a railcard (and neither am I eligible for one).

I have looked on NR, EC and VT sites, but best fares come in at £87+. If I can get it to £60 then it makes the trip do-able, although I think this is very unlikely!

Thanks for any advice available.

I suspect you're booking too soon to get anything decent, but have you tried (for example) splitting at Birmingham?

Some good fares on Megabus, but no suitable times unfortunately.

Tried the BHM split also, but works out more expensive.

Thanks anyway.

I can get it down to £69.60 by splitting:

CDR Glasgow Cen/QSt - Preston Lancs route Carlisle £33.00 B1 (Not before 0930). Break of journey permitted so can be used from/to Motherwell.

CDR Preston Lancs - Warrington Bk Qy £10.60 B1.

SDR Warrington Bk Qy - Crewe route Direct £10.00.

OPR Crewe - Milton Keynes C route Ldn Midland Only £16.00 SK
(Not by trains timed to arrive London before 1300. Not by northbound trains timed to depart any station before 1030. Not by trains timed to depart any station 1630 - 1930 (except 1829 Euston - Crewe) unless a connecting service is being used to complete a journey begun at a valid time. No break of journey.)

Thanks for your time and effort, John. I'll look into this further.
