I think you could have got 1tph into Sheffield but not 2. Capacity on the main line between the junction and Sheffield being the biggest problem. I'd guess that 1tph probably wouldn't attract people out of buses/cars, but the stations are in potentially quite sensible places to offer a decent service so it's not impossible that the business case stacks up.

Councillor Renwick refers to "significant new employment and housing development" along the Barrow Hill alignment but does not give estimations of numbers. Does anyone have more detailed information?

Presumably the 'Staveley Town Deal' details of which are on Chesterfield Borough Council website, proposed or reality I'm not sure

The whole line already has an infrequent passenger service already and the Sheffield end has stations of Darnall and Woodhouse and a proposed station at Waverley.

The Sheffield Retford service is currently hourly but if it returns to pre-covid then the timetable could be redrawn so that Darnall and Woodhouse would be on the Chesterfield route and services could be non-stop to Kiveton Bridge.

Very speculative but a interchange at Nunnery to Supertram/TramTrain would enable much easier journeys to Sheffield centre, the University of, the main hospitals*, Meadowhall and Rotherham. Nunnery already has a P&R and the potential for a much bigger one. Nunnery is less than two miles and could serve by bus the single largest hospital in the region- *The Northern General, which has no dedicated bus route.

To me this is just another crazy example of just because a line exists it MUST be reopened at all costs, whether useful to anyone or not. Where is the passenger potential here? Whittington and Barrow Hill stations would serve penny numbers in low rent communities, Renishaw station is midway between Renishaw village centre which is half mile walk in one direction with Eckington village centre 1 mile in the other, and Killamarsh station is 1 mile from the center of the that village. Unless you are fit these distances are not viable, so you need to get a bus to or drive to the station and anyone doing that, then changing for at best an hourly train, is going to be in the minority. In any case, Halfway Supertram ParknRide exists for those heading to Sheffield. A disgraceful waste of money if it gets off the ground.

Not sure if this is the right forum, but, are these proposals viable ?

This article also mentions possible re-opening of the Leicester-Burton line, with stations at Kirby Muxloe, Bagworth and Ellistown, Coalville Town, Ashby de la Zouch, Moira, and Castle Gresley (for Swadlincote); the last named station would be in Derbyshire. This proposal seems to be more rational.

The "old road" north of Chesterfield only serves relatively small settlements, and the Sheffield SuperTram terminating at Halfway already provides "park and ride" facilities from this area of North Derbyshire for travel into Sheffield city centre.

I don’t think it is worth anyone getting excited/annoyed about it as it will never happen.

Just a load of hot air because north east Derbyshire has a Tory MP with a vulnerable majority and a Tory County Council who may struggle to get a majority at the next election…

As already noted, you have to consider whatever long term housing plans/demand there is in the areas. Just because they dont serve anything now, 20 years may be different.

Indeed, maybe the developers/house builders can chuck some money in to help fund it…!

Thanks for the replies. I've long been interested in all and any proposals for the reinstatement of lines, be they for passenger or freight use.

Slight diversion here therefore....a few years ago, there was a proposal to reopen the line that formerly went to Warrington via Skelton Jnc...in it's heyday, and West Timperley in order to take freight to Carrington and Shell....thus taking quite a few HGV's off the route. The outrage at the time was well in excess of any noise pollution levels...and nothing further happened. Always wondered why that line couldn't be reopened to freight traffic .
