I see from their website that Leisure Select is being phased out later this year, being replaced with Standard Premier. Its hard to work out from whats on teir website how this will differ from Leisure Select, but I sense that its going to be a bit watered down - a 'light meal' rather than a 'meal' etc. Anyone know any more? Bet the price wont change though!

It won't - return fares will be from £189 apparently. So that's worse service for the same money. Unimpressive.

Bring on competing services from DB and others, say I...

Hmmm, Eurostar seem to have lost their focus recently. If they think that this sort of 'improvement' is going to increase customer satisfaction levels, they have made another big mistake!

Having travelled through Paris Nord recently, it'd be a good idea for E* to do something about the departure lounge there

Yeah, the departure lounge at GDN is often the worst part of the experience - hot and stuff, long queues, nowhere to sit.

I've used Leisure Select a few times and it's always seemed identical to when I've gone first - so it will be sad to see them tone it down. I am not that bothered about the lounge because the best part of using Eurostar is being able to turn up pretty close to departure.

I do agree about Paris needing an overhaul, but the bigger incentive for improvement will come when there's competition. Bring it on!

Last time I was in GDN Eurostar terminal (March) all the sinks were out of order in the gents, with a sign saying that they hoped to have them fixed by October!

Ah, they're adopting the British approach to road works. Give a finish date months into the future, then do it early and claim an early completion bonus.

I bet they fixed the sinks the next day and made a fortune. :)

That sign has actually been there since last autumn. I think it's pretty clear they meant last October/November and haven't bothered to fix them yet

Not sure if you should raise your hopes about DB bringing competition. My guess is that DB will buy into Eurostar, then promote through fares from London to Germany and better connections.

Posters on the London tube displaying "The seemless train trip from London to Berlin for £99 return, by DB" etc, etc

Last I heard there were definite rumours (if such a thing exists :D) of DB operating trains through the tunnel - something about a rule that was preventing their trains from going through the tunnel but had now been lifted?

I don't mind who does, anyway - I just think that Eurostar badly need some competition to make them refocus and offer not just a useful but a more pleasant service - as well as perhaps some more reasonable walk-up fares (we can all dream...;))

I'm not sure the tunnel transit rules have actually been relaxed yet, only that this is under discussion but expected to happen imminently.

That's correct - decision should be made this summer. DB's current ICE order should be authorised based on the smoke signals coming from various sources. Whether this will be singly or in pairs I'm not sure - singly would be much more viable economically.

I wonder how much it would be to get to Paris if the Transmanche Metro gets the go ahead as well. St Pancras to Lille and then change onto an SNCF service at Lille Flandres to Paris.

Is TMM a serious proposal now? I've heard it being talked about by a few regional bodies, but didn't know that anyone had made firm plans. The last time I travelled Paris to Lille it was an advance purchase €11 single if that helps.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
PS With South Eastern having three Class 395 sets surplus daily perhaps this is the ideal time to try a (Canterbury -) Ashford - Calais - Boulogne or Lille (- Gent - Bruges) service. If you didn't have to worry about IGC approval and all the technical obstacles, it would be interesting just to see if the market's there for a two-hourly core service with a few trains a day extended at either end.

It seems that the catering offer will be "enhanced" away:
- not hot meal any more, just a cold meal (no choice) consisting of three "tasting dishes" (read: snack-size bites)
- no champagne
- only one (!) complimentary drink, hot or cold.

Full details on this product sheet.

Eurostar's service just seems to get worse and worse. :(

It's all very off-putting - the price isn't even going to fall in line with the reduction in service. I mean, a 'light cold savoury meal' - they might almost as well not bother (though I'd best not put ideas into their heads :D).

Bring on some competition...

I have used Leisure Select 4 times in the past year, for both outward and return trips as staff its never ever cost me more than £36 single, and because its quite reasonable I dont mind paying for it, and still will.

However, the costs levied for BP and LS and now SP, are appaling for what you get. Even the hot meals you used to getwhere not exactly filling, but now its even worse! I had a fantastic time yesterday on Eurostar, but that was cos I was chatting to the train managers for nearly an hour and the crew was plying me with enough booze to get me quite tipsey by the time I got off at STP!

We've managed to get a full bottle of champagne before AFTER a number of refills. I guess that won't happen anymore!

Worth it at staff prices, not at £189+ return...

jonm - NO champagne at all in Standard Premier!

All very depressing - as some posters on the linked forum said, Leisure Select/Standard Premier is no longer worth the money - the journey's too short to pay so much more only for a bigger seat, without the until now excellent meal in Leisure Select.

Standard class from now on, methinks :( .

Since there's no hope of E* getting nationalised, bring on another nationalised operator to run a decent service for the people!

I hope the Eurostar is actually going to listen to the negative feedback, and I hope that many people are not paying extra for Lesiure Select. If they do, I can't believe that there is a lot of repeat business!

The only thing that you can guarantee Eurostar will listen to is the army of accountants telling them that revenue has fallen further!

As I said on the flyertalk thread...

It's not the downgrade in service or even the pricing that annoys me. I understand that companies' costs go up and revenue can suffer in These Hard Times (TM). But please, don't treat your regular passengers like idiots.

I find it contemptuous when companies try and pull the wool over people's eyes. I doubt many of the regular customers are fooled, and, as I intimated, those who do upgrade can't be impressed by the current offering for the price, so i venture to suggest that they will feel it in the pocket!
