We've discussed Christmas already, but what kind of service provision can we all expect on the 1st of January?

I note that the service in Bath is going to be far more restricted this year; previously First ran a full Sunday service but this year only subsidised services will operate! This will mean there are no services at all within a two-mile walk from my room hich basically knocks out any plans I may have had for the day. Bristol also have a poor service, with only five city services operating leaving huge swathes of nothing in the network. And as a result the pivotal 339 link between the two will be nonexistant when I could probably make a healthy profit even on New Year's Day!

I also see that Southend will have its now treaditional heritage day run by local independent Stephenson's, which I took advantage of in 2009, plugging a massive gap in the service that would otherwise be formed of only the X30 coach to Stansted.

What about the rest of the country? Where does well, and where fails?

First are not running any buses in south wales on new years day however we do have a train service on new years day on the south wales mainline and between Bridgend & Cardif central via the vale of glamorgan route.

No services on the rest of the valley lines or between Cardiff & Cheltenham.

It is very odd how some operators offer nothing, some offer a limited service and other offer a full Sunday service on New Year's Day.

Metrobus (and Arriva and London & Country before them) in Surrey & West Sussex have always offered a full Sunday service as long as I can remember. On the other hand, First in Manchester (which should in theory be far more promising bus territory), runs nothing except the free Metroshuttle services.

in Nottingham, NCT are not running any buses on Xmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day. However, Trent Barton are running some buses on Boxing Day & New Years Day, which is a first IIRC

Stagecoach down here (East Sussex) arent running anything at all on the 1st, before they took over Eastbourne Buses, they always ran a Sunday service - no idea why they dont run a service - nothing on Boxing Day either. Not New Years Day, but in Hastings night bus services are operating on the early morning of Christmas Day (til 4AM) - does this happen anywhere else ?

Brighton and Hove are running a normal Sunday service and a limited Boxing Day service

Second year for Trent, although the number of routes running on Boxing day/ New Year's day has increased after presumable success last year

Here in Leicester, Arriva have operated a limited service (hourly mostly with a 2-hour gap in the middle of the day) on Boxing Day since 2006 and the network is expanding slightly this year, I think.

Still, nothing on New Year's Day at all.

No buses will be running in Southampton on 1st January. Meanwhile in Eastleigh, just outside, Velvet will be running their routes A and C1 to a Sunday timetable. What really strange is that the A is normally run by First on Sundays and the C1 by Xelabus. Velvet only run them Mon-Sats, but they've confirmed they'll be running a Sunday service themselves on New Year's Day.

Over here in Lincolnshire, Stagecoach are operating a special service in Skegness and Scunthorpe on Boxing Day with only Skegness operating the same service on New Year's Day (2 trips to Lincoln and hourly up the coast).

The trams are running in Sheffield, as are a select number of routes on a PTE tender (same as Boxing Day).

This year its been awarded to First (all the routes run are First ones). Last year it was awarded to Stagecoach, which meant the rare sight of them running the services of their rival (they ran the normal Stagecoach route in parts of town with an existing Stagecoach service, but in other areas like Loxley they ran the First route, with the First number, which saw a few enthusiasts out taking pictures of "rare" workings)

Metrolink are running to Sunday service
Stagecoach Manchester are running routes 42 (Stockport to Manchester via Wilmslow Road), 43 (Manchester to Airport via Wilmslow Road), 86 (Chorlton to Manchester via Upper Chorlton Road), 101 (Manchester to Wythenshawe via Moss Side and Newall Green), 216 (Ashton to Manchester via Sportcity) & 250 (Trafford Centre to Manchester via Old Trafford). They are also running route 192 with buses every 15 mins Piccadilly - Stockport (terminating), and 30 mins Piccadilly - Hazel Grove
Bluebird are running some services, I can't tell you more than that
Arriva are running route ML1 (Trafford centre shuttle bus) only.
No other buses are running

As usual ignoring the opportunities of running a service on the Lincoln city routes. It means anyone without a car in North Hykeham, Birchwood and other areas south of the city centre faces a long walk or taxi fares (over-priced over the holiday period - some almost doubled) if they want to get to the shops. I'm still amazed that Skegness deserves an hourly service, but Lincoln doesn't get a thing.

Having to hget a lift from Edinburgh on the 1st after hogmanay. Transport Direct was giving me a solitary option involving a coach to Glasgow and another from there. There's a total of two coaches from Edinburgh to Glasgow that day, both late afternoon.
