I flew out from Manchester to Rome yesterday with Jet2. Having looked in advance, I knew they had some new aircraft alongside their older ones. As we got to the gate, I went and got the registration of the aircraft and put it through flight radar which said it was new in 2017. During pushback, the crew welcomed us to this 'brand new' aircraft which had 'only been delivered from the factory in America within the last week or so'

For anyone interested it was Boeing 737-800 G-JZHV

Further digging suggests it was delivered to the UK on 23rd February. Unless it flew in service between 23rd and 26th Feb (FlightRadar24 shows 7 days history which suggests it otherwise first flew 2nd March) then I reckon it only had around 25 in service flight hours!

Has anyone else travelled in such new aircraft?

Yes, in the USA I've flown in a Cessna Stationair which was on its first flight after delivery.

On 16th May 2016 I travelled on Ryanair 737 EI-FRJ which was delivered on the 27th April. So it was only in its third week of service. Pleasantly this was the first commercial aircraft I'd ever flown in!

Many years ago, in the mid-1980s, I flew from Toulouse to Mumbai on the delivery flight of an Air India Airbus. Can't get much newer than that.
There were only about a dozen of us invited guests on the flight and we were allowed to sit in business class, but not first...

Early last month I was on a Norwegian flight from Gatwick to Fuerteventura, where the staff excused that the Wi-Fi was present, yet not set-up yet as the plane had been delivered very recently, and it hadn't been done yet.

It certainly smelled and looked completely brand-new.

EZY Luton to Geneva on an A320 a few years ago. The whole plane had that 'new carpet' smell, and everything was spotless. (It wasn't spotless by the time we got to destination!) The pilot also treated us to a max thrust take off.

Slightly off subject but does anyone know if VH-OEB is still flying? Apologies, the topic got me thinking of the oldest still flying aircraft I have been on. My sister is cabin crew for Easyjet and has been on a couple of first passenger carrying flights. I can't compete with that.

When I worked for easyjet, I was lucky enough to board a couple (in fact the last 2 737's) delivered straight from Boeing field to Luton iirc they were in the G-EZK range of registrations E&G seem to ring a bell. Believe some were scrapped sorry salvaged for parts only after a few years in service.

In early January this year, I flew a brand new Frontier Airbus A320 NEO (registration N304FR delivered in December 2016) which was not even one month old - it still had the brand new plane smell! It was my first flight on the A320NEO and was pretty impressed at how quiet it was.

Flew on a Wizz Air A321 last summer that had only been in service for around 2 weeks and yes it did have that new car smell!

I thought Jet2 only used second hand planes

They have a brand new fleet of 737-800s coming online and are starting operations from Birmingham and Stansted this year.

LX CS1000 from Frankfurt to Zürich about 3 weeks after it entered service. Quite nice, very quiet (due to the geared turbofan engines) with big windows. Also dinky little screens in the hat rack for the Airshow etc, only slightly bigger than an iPhone.

9 August 2013- purely by chance caught almost brand new British Airways A380 G-XLEA on a training flight from Frankfurt to Heathrow (BA911u) on my way back from 2 weeks rail bashing in Europe! Made a fine finale to my annual holiday :)

Thanks for all the responses :)

I had a look the other day at G and I think it was taken for parts after only 7 years in service, or some such

They did until they bought some brand new ones!

Delivered last year from the US and fitted out in the UK.

Do you know what gets fitted to them once in the UK?

Flew on the first flight of two Ryanair planes, as announced by the captain and checked on FR24, previous flight was from Boeing Field, one seat even still had plastic covering over it that someone forgot to remove as I was one of the first one on the plane, very much a new plane smell. On the return flight I was on EI-DAC which was then and still is the oldest plane in the fleet!

Have only travelled by air twice (from Glasgow International to Orlando International & return in the summer of 2007) aboard a Flyglobespan Boeing 767-300. Couldn't say how old or new it was, but the MCO-GLA leg was done in a light-blue/white 767 which was, if I recall correctly, leased from another airline. Irrespective of the airframe's age, it seemed to be well looked after...
