For the clubbers/ex-clubbers among us, where were your hideouts? For me it was the following in the 2000s and early-2010s:

Millennium, C103s, Zanzibar or Destiny's/Oceana when home in Plymouth

Arena, Timepiece or Warehouse in Exeter

Norwegian Blue, Tiger Tiger or the Moon Under Water in Manchester plus Revolution in Wilmslow after work some Fridays.

I have reached the end of my clubbing experience now I am a committed family man, but post-COVID I'm sure a few of us will be seen back in them. Nightlife will change a bit in dynamic, but will far from die out completely.

Oceans and Works in Kingston. Range of different places in Central London.

This was a very long time ago...

Nottingham it was essence with allister whitehead as resident or the bomb for sasha and Giles Peterson in mid 90s. Also a few jungle nights

When moved to London in late 90s it was camden Palace for peach and clockwork orange.

My home town in Suffolk was like most other market towns in that it had 2 types of clubs - the cool club where you could see big name djs and the "sharon and Tracy" club which played cheese and people went to get drunk and pull.

Also did a few clubbing festivals like homelands, the early creamfields and fatboy slim on Brighton beach.

Wigan Town centre - the King Street/Wallgate era for me from 1999 to around 2011.

I've done a list of licenced venues that were not all necessarily clubs - some were pubs open until the early hours. I graced all of these at some stage over the years (a few I only went in once or twice).

Some closed a long time ago and were not necessarily open at the same time as some of the others I've listed.

A handful were located a short distance away from the main King Street/Wallgate hub but were still in the town centre.

Princes
Ibiza Bar
Chicago Rock
Jumpin Jaks
Springbok (later the Hub)
Walkabout & Surfer's Paradise (same club)
Orange House (later became Mortimers)
Flares 70s bar (which then became Reflex 80s bar)
Maloneys
Berkeley Square
The Officers Club
Shapirros
Pemps
Harry's Bar
Embargo
The 'Vic' (aka the Victoria)
The Last Supper
The Last Orders (was also the Bees Knees for a while)
The Raven
Bentleys
Scott's
JR's
Turn Key Cellars
Liquid
Envy
Number Fifteen
Little Fifteen
John Bull Chop House
Yates (which became Allinsons then the Ship before it was demolished to make way for the new shopping mall)
Steps
Maximes
The Tudor
The Anvil
The Swan & Railway
The Moon Under Water

3/4 of the venues on this list are gone and much of the night time era is over. There were a few others I've not listed, but I cannot recall their names.

Hard to believe an average sized market town would have so many licenced premises. It was almost like the Falaraki of the North at one stage.

Sheffield has (had) the classic four: Corp, Code, Plug, Leadmill. All within five minutes walk of each other.

Not sure if I’ll be out clubbing again anytime soon, but I’m definitely going back to music gigs once things open up.

I only moved to Sheffield in 2015, which is when I believe Code opened anyway.

But that does explain where the Gatecrasher name (for the student flats) came from!

I'm not really sure you can class Code as a classic, it's only been in existence for what, three years!?

In the timeframe that the OP mentions, you also had Republic (later renamed to Gatecrasher, then burnt down and now student flats), Kingdom (-> Embrace -> Area, still standing), original Corp (demolished), both student union's (one still doing events, the other not bothering), Bed (now a supermarket) and Club Wow (now a crazy golf course and laser quest) for 1000+ capacity clubs in the city.

Crystal, Reflex, Flares, Walkabout, Yates, Bessemer, and a few others I've forgotten the names of kept the "plub" (pub / club late-bar with dancefloor) market busy.

In fairness I’m coming at it from an outsiders’ perspective. Those four clubs, along with West Street (as a whole) and Foundry (Sheffield SU), are the clubs that I heard about (and frequented) during my time as a student in the last five years.

Area has a horrific reputation, it’s a rather seedy venue, and I’ve heard some strange stories about the owner...

Plug was my favourite of the Sheffield clubs, and I thought quite an imaginative one. Remember an ice cream van in the smoking area and (a different night) they gave out mince pies to people on their way out.

Never saw the appeal of Corp when the Leadmill was almost as cheap with better tunes!

I'm guessing Wigan draws in people from the smaller towns in West Lance as well as from Greater Manchester?

Plug definitely put on some good events. Corp's USP (for students at least) was the "school disco" Wednesday, none of the other nights were particularly great.

Surely corps USP is coloured pints and vodka that can strip paint from 15 meters! That or the toilets, no visit to corp is complete without a visit.

School disco of course was originally at Bed, and neither of Plug's busiest nights originated there either, jump around (basically Disko from Republic / Gatecrasher) and propaganda (national event, previously at academy, now at corp).

Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on the weather!) the days of Sheffield clubs having enormous queues most nights of the year are all gone now. Sure places are still busy, but the days of "if I'm not in the queue by 8.30 I'm not going to get in" are long gone.

Underworld or whatever it was called in Camden used to be alright.

Wigan always got a good overspill of punters from Ormskirk & Skelmersdale which are West Lancs towns with little or no nightlife.

Hmm, let's see.

Purple Turtle on Gun Street? They had live music most nights, both upstairs and downstairs.

Pavlov's Dog on St. Mary's Butts? Plenty of alternative music nights there. Also in Bar Iguana next door.

Po Na Na on Gun street shut about ten years ago but had regular acoustic sessions etc.

There was also the Rising Sun pub on Forbury Road by the station, although that's been closed and derelict for years now. Very... metal friendly, that place.

The other one that springs to mind might have been the Rising Sun Arts Centre off London Road, but that was more of a centre for hippies that happened to have a licence to sell booze.

My nightclubbing days are over, but I used to go to North London - yes the likes of Camden Town, Islington area in general and the Forum in Kentish Town which was a 80's club on a Saturday Night and showed cartoons.
Also used to frequent Manchester and many years ago Bolton (City Lights, Maxims, Maxwell's).
I always saw more trouble up north than down south.
I think the last time I did a clubs 'proper' was about 10 years ago, I think I took £150 with me and came home with loose change. I sat up in the morning thinking I'd been mugged, but when I worked it out, I'd spent it.
Only been thrown out of club a once, I didn't do anything wrong the bouncers wanted to have a go at me but luckily all mates were with me so when I was thrown out we all left.

There use to be a short lived nightclub in Wigan called Kudos which was opposite the front of the JJB Stadium, so out of town.

Wednesday nights in the early 2000s was 50p a pint on Fosters & standard Carlsberg. Those were the days when you could get hammered off a £5 but the barrels were either close to their sell by date or had gone off, hence you had a dodgy gut for a couple of days.

Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever had a decent pint in a nightclub.

I've seen trouble in the South West. Plymouth was lively back in t'day, and I believe Bristol could be too. Maybe it's a London vs provincial city thing.

York has one of the best pub scenes in the U.K., but has always been dreadfully lacking in the nightclub department. In the late 90's, there were essentially three of them in the city centre - "The Gallery"; "Toffs" and "Ziggy's". The latter being an independent, while the other two were owned by Northern Leisure, then taken over by Luminar Leisure, and were all nondescript places to get a few more drinks back in the days of pubs closing their doors at 11pm. York thought it had found it's own "Superclub" right at the end of the old Millennium, with the opening of "Ikon & Diva" as part of the Clifton Moor retail park about four miles out of the city centre. The place was popular for a time, being a bit of a novelty. I seem to remember them running free shuttle buses from the busy "pre-club" pub area in Rougier Street - these were a torrid experience in themselves, by large, and unfortunately in the last few months of the club's operations one of these buses was involved in a serious RTA in the early hours of the morning, with several injuries and a fatality - it was reported in the media that this was sadly down to drunken antics of a passenger on board who served several years in prison for their actions.

I attended University in Dundee from 1998 - 2003, and found the clubs there to be far more refreshing. The "Mardi Gras" was the popular choice at that time, but I preferred the alternative scene offered by it's neighbour "Fat Sams". Around about 2000-01, there was something of a "price war" on drinks, with clubs knocking out shots of vodka for between 20p - 50p on midweek evenings, and another venue (I think perhaps "Club Oasis") did an all you can drink for a fiver deal. Ultimately, all this led to inevitable carnage, and not long after Dundee City Council ended up bringing in a minimum pricing structure for licensed premises (with, I think exceptions for private members clubs, such as the Student Union / Social Clubs although I may be wrong on that).

Not been in a nightclub for nearly eleven years (the last time being on my thirtieth birthday). I cannot say that I miss them. Longer and more flexible pub opening hours accommodate my socialising and drinking needs nowadays - well maybe not in 2020! (Although it's a rarity I'd be out much after 11 in any case)!

Edinburgh has it's fair share of nightlife. Some of it is even good! When I was at college, our regular haunt of a Tuesday evening was Bar50 (On Cowgate, for those of you familiar with Edinburgh) before walking round the corner to Hive for the Alt/Trash/Emo night.
Some other great Edinburgh bars i frequented pre-covid include Pilgrim, Tron, Three Sisters, Frankenstein's (Yes, really. Look it up) Liquid rooms and Wash Bar.
I've never been a fan of the more 'up market' nightclubs like Why Not, Bourbon or Cabaret Voltaire, especially when it's £6 odds for a rum and coke and the music sucks.

Never been to Glasgow for a night out, although I hear it's pretty good.

I may be bias, but Glasgow does have a good scene for night outs.

When I started going out to Glasgow for nights out, I tend to stick around the Merchant City. That's the place to be for nightclubs and bars, that area is also very LGBT+ friendly with most of the LGBT+ bars and nightclubs located in the Merchant City.

I was lucky enough to be from the Liverpool area and was clubbing from about '94, some great clubs most notably Cream in the Oakenfold and Fontaine eras, also have had some great nights in The Drome, 051, Buzz, Aquarium. 50p night on a Wednesday at Ruperts in Birkenhead was an experience too. Great times.

Biggest regret of my clubbing days was never going to cream at nation. Id been to a cream tour night but not the same.

Once lockdown is over I said I'd go back to ministry for first time in 20 years. The only decent 90s club still open

It was a fantastic club, once I'd been I became a regular for about 6 or 7 years. I had some unforgettable nights there. Glad I was around at the right time to experience it when it was at it's best.

Definitely used to to Pavs but I don't think that was the place.

I'm not surprised Po Na Na closed nor do I mourn for the place...

Returning to London I just remembered McCluskies in Kingston (shudders)...

While we're on the subject of clubbing, where are the best kebabs?

One of my best mates maintains the further north you go the better the kebab (he claims Brighton has the worst kebabs) although Blackpool seems to be the exception to the rule...

BTW once went clubbing in Blackpool about 12 years ago. What is the name of the club with the revolving floor?

When I was in my late teens, there were 2 clubs here in Harrogate - Carringtons & Legends. Josephines opened a bit later. Back then, all pubs closed at 11 - if you wanted to stay out any later, you had to go to a club (that may seem an alien concept to some on here). Went to Carringtons a few times, it was opposite the supermarket I worked at so it was handy for us 6th formers that worked there and some of the younger staff. I have to say that clubs never really suited me. When I go out for a drink etc, my requirements tend to be: no ridiculous wait to get served/bar too busy ; decent selection of beer ; be able to get a seat ; able to chat with friends (ie music not too loud). Nightclubs don't really fit that criteria!

I think the last time I went to a nightclub was g-a-y around 15 years ago when it was at The Astoria (since demolished for Crossrail) as there was someone performing that I fancied seeing. I'm sure I was at the older end of age spectrum even then.

Nowadays, even though many pubs are open past 11, you won't often find me out that late!

Havent been out for years, clubs just not my thing, rather go to a pub. Cant imagine going clubbing every weekend.

Most if not all of them are 3am now. A few actually get an extended license during August to stay open til 5am during the Edinburgh Festival/Fringe.
