No departure time at stations

Hi, forgive me if this is covered elsewhere.

Is there a reason why some stations do not show times for upcoming departures, often a 'first train platform X' at Uxbridge, for example.

Is this an end of the line quirk or expected behaviour at some stations?

Thanks a lot

Is it perhaps something to do with the fact that trains depart so frequently between adjacent platforms that they just have an arrow pointing to whichever one is departing first?

Battersea Power Station has this too, and Brixton.

It's only really an issue at a limited number of locations with older signalling systems which are not linked to the timetable. In effect, the station displays don't know what time the train will be departing.

Its a real pain at Uxbridge. It was probably my fault - a case of reading the First Piccadilly train rather than the First Departure above it but I've got on the wrong train and seen another go out first. I don't think that it was just me. Presumably Uxbridge has not been resignalled yet.

Still controlled from Rayners Lane signal cabin, not due to be resignalled until SMA14 West Harrow-Uxbridge, probably 2026.

As mentioned above, the signalling in the Uxbridge area is still controlled from Rayners Lane signal cabin. The platform indicators themselves at Uxbridge are actually controlled manually by the signaller at Rayners using a set of rather primitive buttons that send an analogue signal. I've attached the best photo of the control panel I could find from my time there.

I've seen this recently on the Jubilee Line though for a temporary period. The DMI saying Jubilee Line, Northbound trains. What might this have meant?

Was this at a multi-platform station like North Greenwich?

It simply means the next train hasn't reached the detection point for the information at that station yet.

The west bound Piccadilly platform at Kings Cross has not had any departure information on it for about two weeks.

Harrow on the Hill has some strange characteristics
Uxbridge direction the indicators sometimes display nonsense including phantom trains
( ie train shown 2 minutes and 4 minutes is the actually the same train)

A long standing (3+ years) cable fault. Without going into details (this has been the bane of my life professionally for those 3+ years) the DMIs were upgraded for the new signalling and try to be clever in terms of showing trains further away than the legacy system allowed (the next train routed in). Due to the cable fault trains get ‘stuck’ in the system at Northwick Park, until another train arrives there, irrespective of actions by the local signaller (who still retains full control of the area and information).

Please, whenever you have issues with the DMIs at Harrow - or indeed if you were to end up missing a train because of the duff info - report it to TfL Customer Services. The fault is only going to get fixed if it has “a customer impact”… or when the new signalling arrives.

The Jubilee Line SCC has had issues with the DMIs across the whole line failing to receive information, recently. They should be fixed now.

This has really bothered me a lot. Sometimes the trains also approach the station and stop showing where the train is headed!

How do I make a complaint about this these days? Can it still be done online?

Queens Park Bakerloo has been broken for a fair while. It'll show the next Southbound train is at 06:19 or so despite the time actually being after 11am. Overground DMIs seem to be working as usual.
